Jacksonville radio & what's really going on!

my first post on this forum and I want to keep it real and get many opinions about the state of broadcast radio in northeast florida.
From purely a listener's point of view, and being a mature adult,my listening habits generally center around the two am talkers-600 and 690.
for the 600'er, I am wondering why I hear so many obviously production related errors...sloppy network with voice overs left off and hearing spots not designed to play for this market. not a big deal but it happends enough to make me think they don't listen to their own station.
what happened to the top of the hour cbs newscast? far better then what's currently filling the space.
do any of their local sponsors ever think of having more than a little difference in their spot? isn't it possible to put a rotator in the schedule? underwood jewelry causes me to get up and turn off the spot for a minute or so.
WOKV
690
who are they writing their breaking stories for? everything in life isn't an out of breath emergency, especially when the story has been all over the web for 2 days prior to the breathlessly delivered breaking news.

Weather breaking into network shows for 30 min to relay news that a tornado was a possibility for the area. a full discussion to fill the entire 30 segment when obviously the facts were [are] all that in necessary. Is our society so pablum fed that common sense is no longer availabl? here's a flash: if you fall off your bike, you might skin your knee!

there is a lot more but I don't want to outstay my welcome.
welcome your comments and insights.

regards

Although I do not agree with the concept, it is called "sensationalizing" the news. I know of a local TV station that its assignment editor openly admitted to taking an otherwise nothing story and making it sound bigger that it really is or was in an effort to gain ratings.

i think the market deserves much better but from the lack of comments, perhaps we're getting just what the majority feel is acceptable.

Interested Listener, welcome to the board!

On the subject of news/talk mistakes, these boards/other markets have discussed that a lot. Mistakes do happen no matter the format. But for news/talk, those mistakes need to be identified and corrected ASAP because listener credibility can be at stake.

Sensationalism in the news has existed for quite a long time. I’m afraid it is not only here to stay but I get the feeling the corporate folks have embraced it as a ratings strategy. Especially over the last few years, news on the radio is presented not so much as breaking news – unless it is – but rather in more of a conversation style to include input from experts/news makers/pundits as well as reactions from typical listeners.

The average person is probably aware of what is happening by watching morning news TV before they head out. Some may be like me where I’m on the computer in the wee hours. There I can choose what to read or even what videos to watch. It brings an entirely new meaning to “Me TV.”

I’ve always thought WOKV did a great job in their overall presentation and approach in that I believe they get inside their listeners heads giving them what they want. But I have concerns.

A significant part of the programming is conservative talk. The prevailing opinion I’ve seen is it is not as entertaining as once was, it’s predictable, even mean-spirited and it’s just a rehashing of the same things over and over continuing from one host to the other. My own take is I believe with Neal Boortz’s retirement there were mighty big shoes to fill – and they weren’t. It left a pretty big void.

With the move to a bigger, full market signal comes the pressures to perform even better. What I fear the most is corporate meddling. Interested Listener, you talked of the “market deserving better” and that has been a subject talked to death. Trust me – it’s something not only listeners want but I believe radio folks want too. If the execs need to look to correct any potential issues, they need to look at their talk lineup and leave the news area alone. I have a lot of faith and confidence in Team WOKV because of their track record. But in radio, past performance means very little especially to the corporate execs.
