Jacksonville September 2011 PPM Results

For the most part, the ratings were pretty much what I expected, however, I noticed that the ratings from classic rock WSOS has gone down from a 1.7 to a 1.2. On the other hand, the ratings for WFYV went up from a 2.4 to a 2.9. I don't know anything about the rock format so what is the main reason why WSOS is floundering in the ratings and is there a format change coming soon?

WFYV's 100kw signal is far superior to WSOS' 5.5kw signal. I'm sure the vast coverage difference between the two stations has much to do with the ratings. If the listener cannot hear the station, the station will not rate.

Yes, it looks like Classic Rock 94.1 WSOS is trending in the wrong direction, suffering listener erosion, even in the cume numbers. And, yes, I agree their signal is problematic, no matter what the format. Originally, 94.1 WSOS started out on a tower near their studios, just off SR16, with about 19,000 watts erp at just over 300 ft. They had a very good signal for St. Augustine and vicinity, and the nearby beaches. But, around 2005, the company that sold the facility to Renda, I'm guessing as part of the deal, moved the transmitter farther north, near the World Golf Village, on a shorter tower, in order to get the full C3 power up to 25,000 watts, and the signal closer to Jax. The signal was still good in St. Augustine proper, but, from what I remember, not as good at St. Augustine Beach, etc. The city of license was then changed to Fruit Cove, as Renda intended to make this a Jacksonville move-in. They are now on the old 92.7 tower in Fruit Cove with 5,500 watts erp at about 500 ft, and a bit short spaced to 94.1 in Savannah. They've got more Jacksonville coverage, at the expense of losing St. Augustine, and in actuality, with the lower power, the signal seems to only be really effective in areas of Mandarin, Julington Creek, and on the opposite side of the St. Johns, around Orange Park, Doctor's Inlet, and Fleming Island. And, as Mark has already pointed out, the WSOS 5.5kw signal is no match for 100kw WFYV, especially in a city the size of Jacksonville. Unless, Renda can somehow boost the signal, it would seem a totally unique format, and I'm not sure what it would be, would be more advantageous for 94.1 WSOS.

Aren't we missing the bigger picture here? A low powered true classic rocker has done a very good job of nearly beating the the long time dominant Rock 1045 (formerally Rock 105). 94.1 has great imaging, sticks to the classic rock format, while WFYV is nowhere near a 3 share, sounds like X102.9 most of the time and has probably confused it's listener base since moving to Active Rock 1045. Grease and Bubba didn't last long either. Cox has work to do here.....

Vadar, I have no problem with the WSOS presentation, except for the lack of any live human touch, the imaging is consistent, and they're picking the right music. They came out of the box, sounding and looking good, but why aren't the listeners hanging around? The early ratings seem to indicate a potential lack of interest, that's reason for concern. I wish Renda and 94.1 WSOS well, competition IS good, but, it seems to me, no matter what you do on that signal, you've got an uphill battle. I also agree that WFVY is not performing anywhere near the level they were at one time. Trends and tastes change, it's up to the powers that be, to figure out how to adapt to an ever changing market!

And, I can "fix" 104.5 for Cox, giving it close to, if not exactly, double digits. Cox has already been following my lead in other markets, so for that reason I will no longer give out any additional "free" consulting advice on these boards. Cox and I may as well make it an official working relationship.

Hot A.C.? I dunno, when I was a student @ Flagler about 14 years ago, 104.5 didn't impress me. I'd try to listen thru the static to hear Big 106.5 & Arrow 100.7 instead of Schlock 105. It was always the same 7 bands. I don't know how they are now but if they were to flip formats, there'd be no love lost here.

94.1 had a decent sound when I 1st came to Flagler but then a year or 2 later they started calling themselves "The Muuuuusic Station" (6 lowercase us) which sounded awful. It had become a parody, but people did listen. It was fierce between us (WFOY) & them. As a student on WFCF I was back-announcing the SOS Band & confused SOS with WFCF to create..."WSOS" which I then asked on-air if that was even a real station, forgetting that they were in town!

Mark, I enjoy your insights about North & Central Florida. I hope you are entering into a working relationship with Cox so the North & Central Florida airwaves will sound better than they do!

Nothing new here at all. The best rock and classic rock formats have already been done by better broadcasters. Renda's shoestring operation will always fail without the right resources behind it..
Tonys Renda's train that could simply runs out of gas. It's no fun pushing rocks up hill!

I think a major factor in WSOS and WFYV's lower than anticipated numbers has been Eagle freshening its music. Who would have ever guessed that with the demise of The Point, Rock 105 not the same as it was, SOS going classic rock, and the mere existence of Magic 107.3, people would return again and again to The Eagle? Congrats to them on the positive changes. I'm still a fan of the new WSOS, though (and yes, I live and work in their primary coverage area).
