Jacksonville's New 106.5 FM to launch Thursday.

The headliner says it all.....Cox Radio took ownership of 106.5 The Promise today sending it down to 88.1 which becomes 88.1 The Promise. Right now Cox has 106.5 on the stunting mode.....you will get a kick out of....I hope someone records the stunting.........The new format is unknown but I want to take a shot at it and say it will either be hard rock (alternative), AC (to compete with WEJZ) or even something else....what would be the suprise is that WMXQ (102.9 The Point) gets caught up in the format change game.......well best of luck to Cox.....Jacksonville be ready Thursday morning......oh does anyone know what time Thursday morning the launch of the new format on 106.5 will happen.

Later.

WBGB Spinning Format Wheel
What's COX up to with new acquisition WBGB (106.5)/JACKSONVILLE? The station is in full-on cunning stunting mode with a looped announcement that runs about 10 minutes long. It's very radio-inside, as the scenario is of the GM of the station talking to his staff and suggesting they name the station after him ... JACK!

The GM goes on to hint at references to Sports, Talk, Dance, and Spanish ... with the stunt ending with the OPIE & ANTHONY theme song, along with the repeated reminder to listen THURSDAY (9/21). Alas, there is no time indicated for the tune in. Standby!

If they're going to run the Opie and Anthony song, maybe they'll become talk, but O+A are only on CBS Radio stations.

There's no local oldies station. The nearest one is in Brunswick, Georgia (WKQL). Maybe an oldies or classic hits format? That would create competition against WJGL.

To anyone in the area: you've GOT to hear this loop they're playing. Hilarious! And even better since they manage to get in one very obvious dig at CC, and another at Renda, specifically its most famous personality. I love it!

You are right on the money on this........I just want to know what the new format is for crying out loud......the old Promise website no longer exist as of this afternoon.

Hey we are talking about Cox here....WJGL and WBGB are now sister stations as of this today.

I didn't realize that. I'm not from the Jacksonville area, so I don't know much about the market. I guess you can rule out classic hits!

More amusing to me is the fact that you didn't even know WKQL used to be the call letters for WJGL when it was an oldies station for 14 years (or so) until it became The Eagle back on December 25, 2004. Trust me, Cox won't do oldies...

I've got to get in touch with my buddies over at Cox and see if they can either point me to the stream or get me a copy of that loop. Sucks being 1100 miles away...I'd really like to hear it.

Cudos to Cox Radio for at least stirring the pot and getting some excitment going in the Jax market. I must have heard that thing a dozen times already. It's a hoot.
This is like trying to solve a puzzle but I think enough clues were given to at least eliminate a few formats.
But if O&A are a sure thing then it would seem logical that whatever format follows would need to build on the audience attracted to that show. For me, it only leaves some form of rock. One could be a rock AC like what they do in Orlando with WMMO. The other could be an active rock like they do in Miami 93Rock (WHDR). Perhaps a hybrid of combining some elements of both to be unique. The station can't sound exactly like Planet but my thinking is they are going after Planet's listeners.
I think if 106.5 leans more toward an AC Rock, then expect the Point to flip down the road to some Coast -like format that is female-friendly without raining on WAPE's parade. Just hunches but the unvailing will be here very soon.

Well.. it's NEWS, my friends! A simulcast of WOKV. If you'll check out the post I made back on July 7th.. that was my guess. I even think I used the word "Bingo"! Because it really made the most sense. And, you know why? It doesn't cost them any more money! They just throw a switch and "Bin...... wellll.. you know the rest!

Cox To Simulcast Talk WOKV-A On Newly-Acquired WBGB-F
After stunting with new acquisition WBGB (106.5)/JACKSONVILLE the past few days (NET NEWS 9/19), COX announces that, come tomorrow (9/21) at 5a, the station will flip to a simulcast of crosshall sister Talk WOKV-A.

Commented COX/JACKSONVILLE Market Manager BILL HENDRICH, "The acquisition of WBGB-FM has allowed us to expand the reach of WOKV’s very successful AM News/Talk station. This simulcast represents a tremendous growth opportunity. We look forward to introducing the COX RADIO brand to our newest listeners in the JACKSONVILLE market."

"The WOKV simulcast greatly enhances our ability to serve and reach JACKSONVILLE radio listeners," said WOKV PD MIKE DORWART. "While the WOKV brand has entered the FM spectrum, we remain focused on being JACKSONVILLE’s top station for news, traffic, weather, and talk!"

Not what we were expecting huh???

Can we hold out hope that this press release is a stunt as well? Nah, they wouldn't go to THAT much trouble.

This stunt had some funny inside jokes, but the best stunt on this frequency was how they transitioned from Big 106.5 to The Promise.

Friday afternoon: a loop of "The End" by The Doors
Friday evening and all weekend: Top 40 "Power 106." The station for women 24-39. They even said so! It was a 90 minute loop, likely a jab at how that format repeats the hits so often.
Monday: two versions of "Jesus Is Just All Right With Me" looped
after that: same, but with a child asking, "Why do they keep playing this song over and over?"

The most ironic thing about that stunt? Not a year later did Clear Channel REALLY launch a Top 40 in Jacksonville. That one featured simulcasts of Real Radio 104.1 and David Lamm, followed by a ticking clock and some backward messages aimed directly at APE.

This is the best and most original stunting ever. I heard it when I was down in Jacksonville yesterday. Brian V's link gave me a chance to play it for my current and final wife, Dianne. Good stuff! Classy the way they sent the Promise listeners to the new frequency! I was rooting for the beer drinkin' station, but Rush in stereo is cool with me!
