Jacobs & Marotta on XTRA - Picking up where they left off

When they were alternating hosts and brought in Costa for two shows from Denver a few weeks ago, he clearly showed his ability to drive a show on his own, with a singular voice...plus he had the phone lines exploding for the three hours he was on

Since when is exploding phone lines the sign of a good talk show? Most hosts that rely on phones do that because they can't fill the time on their own. And the reason Costa had the phone lines blowing up for 3 hours is that most people were either correcting his mistakes "Leonardo Barbosa" or were just pissed off at his abrasive style, a strategy employed by Arnie Spanier for the last 15 years.

Unfortunately very BIG corrections are in order here.

Firstly to put Dino Costa and Arnie Spanier in the same sentance is a huge insult to Costa. While Spanier is hostile and ignorent all the time, Costa is much brighter than Spanier, and talks up a higher degree of thought provoking material. Spanier would be lost trying to hang with the game that Costa procures on an everyday basis.

Secondly while Costa did make a mistake with regard to Leandro's first name, this could have easily happened to anyone, and only a single caller brought it up, and Costa quickly called himself out on it.

Thirdly while Costa did have almost non-stop phone calls the two days he was on, anyone who has ever heard Costa's show in Denver knows that the LAST thing Dino Costa likes to do is to talk to phone callers on anything resembling a consistent basis. His mouth is too big for this and so is his huge ego. I should know, I not only know Dino Costa...but I also work with him.

Dino Costa would be the first to admit that a high volume of phone callers is a huge overestimation in judging the men from the boys in talk radio.

Lastly the response to Costa on XTRA Sports was extremely positive. I have no idea if Costa and XTRA ever got to the point of any discussions about bringing the Costa show to Phoenix, but I'm willing to bet Costa wouldn't have bitten on an offer anyway.

Costa has waaaaaay too many good things going on for himself here in Denver to bolt anytime soom, and if he did he would be a moron to do so, I'd be the first in line to tell him so. Besides his radio show, he also has his television program on Fox Rocky Mountain, serves as a post game host on the Rockies Fox telecasts, and his star is seemingly on the rise over at Fox here in Denver.

Phoenix had permission to borrow the big mouthed, big ego, Dino Costa, for a few afternoons.

However full time wise, he's Denver's treasure...and hopefully will be for a long time.

Jofta you just got backhanded and deep sixed and THAT is the best you can do?

I apologize for being the one who mentioned the Dino Costa shows on xtra, the last thing I want to do is to start a hand grenade toss going back and forth between anyone.

For the record, Costa was solid in the two days I heard him. JMO.

As for Marista, do you work with Costa on the radio or the tv side?

Dino's show was weak. Amateur hour(s). For somebody from out of town who can't even get players names right (LB and Rolle....etc.) to spend a great deal of time either insulting his local guests or professing how great he is and incorrectly professing his sports "knowledge" is not good radio. Nobody can be serious that hearing Dino say how great Dino is makes for good radio....

This happens everytime Costa auditions in another market. A bunch of "positive" posts on these boards about what a huge star he is and how well he did "the phones were blowing up"...It's Costa posting. Simple as that. And if he was doing so well in Denver (which pays better than PHX anyway) why would he want to move up jsut a few market sizes?

You know I've often wondered (as I'm sure many wonder) how many true radio people actually will take the time out of their schedules to post on radio boards like this one?

As to Dino Costa, if he is on here under an assumed name, I would have trouble understanding what he (or any other radio personality) would see as a true benefit to posting something...anything! This is for the most part a radio board with nothing but opinions and they're like a-holes, everyone (I think???) has one!

This isn't a job site, this isn't a tea room for program directors to hang out in and talk shop. For those reasons I'd have to think that it's doubtful anyone with a brain would be into self promotion on a site like this.

Costa and others should be hard at work if they are currently on the air somewhere, not wasting their time on a silly radio message board like this one and others like it.

I may sound like I may be agreeing that it might be Costa making these posts about him, but I'll do him a favor and give him the benefit of the doubt...I'm sure the guy is busy enough doing a radio & tv thing, running his website etc.

By the way who ever said that Costa's appearance on XTRA was an audition?

You are so wrong. Air talent and programmers read the information here. It's kind of like listening to CB radio around the country to see how an election is going to turn out. The truckers and other traffic on CB during an election year can say a great deal about how America is voting. By the same token on air personalities
check boards such as this to secretly find out what people think of them, think of their shows. It's also interesting to find out what people think of your station, mistakes that may be made, or great things your station is doing. The men and women who write on these boards are amazingly knowledgeable about radio broadcasting and I know of news directors and program directors who regularly read even if it's just for momentaqry entertainment.

Don't put Radio info.com down as far as it's being a "source" of any kind. IT IS.

Jayaz you make great points. However I was talking about someone in the sense that if they were to promote themselves under a phony moniker, this would be the last place I would think they would find success doing that. As for the information here it is very good, and why I keep coming back. Your points though, are well taken.

To illustrate further, lets say that Bruce Jacobs or Darrell Ankarlo thought that they had great shows. To go under a phony name here to tell anyone drifting through this board that they had a great show today, would be a waste of their time. What they would hope to accomplish as a "secret" contributor to the board would be nothing as far as I'm concerned.

There are those in the industry who post under either their real/radio names (Bruce Kelly for one) or a nickname that most of us can figure out (Jayaz here, or Bruce St. James (aka BSJ) on the original Tanim board, for example), and they contribute to the board.

But there are others who make up a name and are so blatant about either pimping or dissing a particular station or personality that they can only be considered trolls for themselves/their station or trashing the competition needlessly. Those are the folks we can all do without.

Don't ever think for a moment that the egos that broadcast wouldn't sign in with some unrecognizeable
name just to read about themselves , bad or good. It's the old "I don't care what they say as long as they spell my name correctly" (or even incorrectly) adage.

I once worked with a man who would leave a meeting and stand outside the door to hear what was said about him after he left.

But that's O.K. it's just another way of getting instant air checks.

The bad news comes when everyone says you've lost it and your time has passed. You really don't want to read that.
