Jake Sommers

I just heard Jake on the air with Steve Kelly and they announced he would be on the air Sunday morning, and also do other shifts with Sunny 95.
Congratulations Jake. :)

Today I welcome Sunny 95 to the preset on my radio. Bookmarking their web site as well. Things are once again looking Sunny and 95! :D

Wishing you the best on your new job Jake!

Seems like a lotta fuss over someone landing a weekend gig. ;)

I sounds like there posters are fans of Jake Sommers. If you are a fan of someone,
them having a weekend gig is better then NO gig at all.

A few years back I went to Colorado on vacation, come back, and no Dan, no explanation...with Dan's health at that time I was frantic and praying for him and his family. Found out he was fine but still The River explained nothing. Now I just get back from a missions trip in Las Vegas and no Jake...luckily I found this website and realized here we go again.

I do not want to sow seeds of discontent...just want to know what in the world is going on at The River. I can't even listen to The River in the evening, cause my husband refuses to listen to John Tesh!

Dan, Jake you guys are soooo missed. God Bless you and your families!

Thanks. Your thoughts and prayers are much appreciated. More than you could possibly know. I miss it, too.

John Tesh...the mail version of Delilah? Why on earth doesn't the hubby like listening to that? ;D

Even the best jocks get fired, and it's usually justified. Dan, I'm assuming you were fired? Sounds like Jake was too. I'm sure that if the truth were told, The River's actions were justified. Don't you think? Hate to break up the "love-fest" on this thread.

Sounds to me like they are trying to cut costs and get rid of anybody that might earn more than the budget can afford (excluding upper management of course). However, I don't know that for a fact, just a guess. ???

Fired or not, Jake and Dan are both quality personalities...but that being said, personalities often outgrow small ponds...CVO always has been and always will be a small pond.

Good point xianbroadcaster! You are right, they are both very talented, but also VERY human.

Just to remind everyone, the 3rd post in the conversation was made by Jake...

Hello All,

The River was changing directions and it seemed best that I move on. God has plans for me. I have been praying about doing some other things with addicts and alcoholics, maybe this is my chance. It was a GREAT 6 years...Seeing lives changed. Seeing the station go from a 1.5 to a 4 share has been great. I have a lot invested there and I still think it's the best station that I have ever worked at. Dan Baughman, the GM, is my friend and always will be. I am very sad today and a bit scared but I will press on toward the High calling...I know that I am rough around the edges, but I am still a work in progress. Undecided

Those of you that pray, Please pray for me. Those of you that don't know the One to pray to...I would be glad to tell you about Him.

Jake

I take from that, that Jake left on his own terms....

The River was changing directions and it seemed best that I move on.

Well when I was laid off from my last job, I worded it as... "I was invited to seek new and exciting job opportunities elsewhere"

May sound positive, but it didn't feel that way at the time. Come to think of it, they even escorted me to the door. Gee, doesn't that sound just great!

That's a pretty naive point of view... offensive, really. "... usually justified." ??? I can give you a list of jocks a mile long that were fired for some really off-base "reasons" (TRUTH be told). Not just from The River. First of all, your assumption that I was fired is correct. They never gave me a reason, and I asked... THREE TIMES! They just used that same "new direction" line. In fact, that's what it said in the letter of resignation that they wrote for me and I was asked to sign. The letter made it sound like it was my idea to leave. I refused to sign it.

I can't and won't speak for Jake. I have no idea what happened there, and probaby never will. None of us will, so speculation is pointless. I'll tell you this, you'll never find someone who was more loyal to the station. You'll never find someone who was more loyal to his listeners. He was a cheerleader that I was proud to serve with, not to mention a solid talent. He can play on my team anytime!

Management has "reasons" for doing things and they have excuses. Most of us never know the truth unless it was for disciplinary reasons or ratings were in the toilet. Neither of these was a factor in my case. If you've been in the business for any time at all, you know somebody that was fired because a new PD wanted to hire his buddy from Bucketville, or becaue he was getting too old, or because he was making too much money (DEFINITELY not in my case!)? Those people were probably told the station was "moving in a new direction."

I know, I know... how objective can *I* be?

Wow....spoken like somebody from "management."

Justifiable doesn't have to mean "nice" or "what we wish for" it simply means that there is a reasonable purpose behind such an action, right?

If as a PD I go into a place and they won't let me do my job which may or may not mean bringing in new talent and getting rid of others, then they can keep the gig...it isn't always about the personalities on air and their performance, sometimes it is about relationships or the lack of them.

Lets face it, pretty much every AC/Hot AC/CCM/Country jock on the dial is interchangeable with the other, very few display any sort of noticeable superiority over another in talent...how they identify with the format they work in and that audience on the other hand is where the difference is.

For that reason, Jake and Dan or whoever else may be hard for an audience to forget...but sadly, for the jock, they always do...that doesn't mean the jocks work wasn't appreciated while they were part of that circle, it's more because of the whole "out of sight out of mind" factor.

Looks like Jake got a job..

KTIS/Minneapolis has hired Jake Sommers as their new 7-mid air personality starting Sept 29. Jake was most recently heard in afternoons WCVO/Columbus (104.9 The River) where he spent the last six years. “I am thrilled for Jake to be a part of the KTIS family,” said Jason Sharp, KTIS Program Director. “Jake is no doubt one of the most authentic and compelling Air Talent in our format and I cannot wait for the KTIS listeners to meet him.” (8/23)
