James Baker named Sholin Prouducer

Former K101 PD James Baker has been named the Prouducer for the Duke's KFRC Morning show, this will be a great asset to the Morning show.

Congrats to James and good luck.

James is from the bay area and grew up on KFRC.

James and myself were some of the fasted dialing callers back in the 70's and 80's while trying to win goodies and tickets from the BIG 610.

Good Luck to James...worked with him at CheapChannel. He was a little rough with people skills early on, but seemed to come into his own when he was named PD. I thought his departure from Star 101.3 was unfair.

Although the move after he left, cutting Uzette loose and moving up April Sommers, was a good one.

You won't find anyone who works harder and more PRODUCTIVELY than James. Should be a great asset.

James once stayed up around the clock during one of our Big 610 countdown shows, Les Garland, PD was very impressed when he met James. James was a real activist radio listener, and is a dear friend. Good luck, James ... You'll be great! Speaking of old radio promotions, anyone remember the "Battle of the Bands"? I loved that one. -John-

I had almost forgotten about the Reagan Years...Of course, I met him when he was known as Jim and was married to Tammy Faye. ;)

So how many PD's Present and Past are now at the New KFRC? Preston, Jordan, Sholin, Baker...And J. Coffee was a PD at K-earth for a while. So by next Monday there will be 5.

Sorry if I missed anyone, but I lost my program.

Hey John!!!

Nice of you to reappear. You are talked about so much (ALWAYS good) and have been so silent. Glad to have you back...in more ways than one!!! Happy to have you back on the air. Even the ID's are magical. I am glad they are using them.

Congrats to James! I learned a lot from him, and wish him nothing but success.

Ooops, I think I meant to say: Battle of the Hits, not Battle of the Bands. For those of you new to this idea, a song kicked off the event (usually a long weekend) ... ask James Baker. ... Then it was song against song, Champion/Challenger, the winner (by phone calls) stayed the champ til something knocked it off. "Stairway to Heaven" - Led Zepplin would stay champion forever til people got sick of it and knocked it off. As I recall (???) the biggest winners went into a superbattle? (or did I imagine that?) James Baker can tell you, those days were a gas! "High/Low Cash" was fun too! A mystery amount and every contestant would go 10 (?) seconds for Hi/Low cash. Every guess would require "High!" ... "Low!" try it sometime, not as easy as it sounds! Those radio contests were classic! Once at KFRC (I swear it's true...) I gave away $10,000 cash ("Don't Say 'Hello', Say K-F-R-C Plays All The Hits" win $5,000. Tell me the song on the air, "Life in the Fast Lane" - Eagles and win double cash $10,000 dollars.) I gave away $10,000 and a new car in 45 minutes! It was a mindblower. Then there was "The Visible Vault", a little box we took to participating retailers with a key inside to a brand new car. Wow, those promotions were something. -John-

I second the motion that its great to have John back in motion here on the board and back on KFRC where he belongs, It was worth the wait and we hope for more JMF in the future.

John High/Low was one of my favorites I always "too Low" and always lost when I tried, thats if I dialed faster then James Baker and made it in. There was a number of us always dialing away The Contra Costa Times even did a story on Debbi Rose from Orinda once and there was a guy who lived on Bush Street who won stuff all the time.

Looking forward to your show on Sunday and I'm just minutes away from the Top of the hour ID coming up...Congrats John on your return to 106.9 KFRC

Wow - I remember that, though I thought it was called "The Million Dollar Battle." That could have been only on KHJ, which also had "Million Dollar Weekends," and KHJ-TV had the 8:00 PM "Million Dollar Movie." Before each song was a drumroll and dramatic announcement - "On the Million Dollar Battle - The Champion!"] (or "Challenger," depending).

I remember listening one weekend on KFRC when "The Last Song (I'll Ever Write for You)" by Edward Bear was the Champion for about 3 hours. Kind of brutal, actually...I had to change the channel after about 8 repeats. I figured teeny-boppers were flooding the phone lines after each playing so it would stay on top. Better Led Zeppelin.

As the line from Harry Chapin's song WOLD went: "You should hear me talkin' to the little children, and listen what they say to me..." All too true. DJs were much more than just jocks. Shoulder to cry on, drugline, rapeline, etc. before any of that stuff existed. Some of us should have had degrees in psychology!

Llew: It was "The Million Dollar Battle" on KHJ the week before the official launch of Boss Radio in 1965. On KFRC, in 1975, it was called "The Battle Of The Hits", and on KHJ in 1977, it was "The Music Playoffs". Those are the three which I've heard on airchecks. Memory (increasingly a dicey proposition) tells me that it was done every few years on both stations, and usually called "The Battle Of The Hits".

For those who want to hear what it sounded like, Reelradio has examples of the Million Dollar Battle on KHJ in 1965 and of Shana doing The Battle of The Hits on KFRC in May of 1975.

Hate to burst your bubble but, JMF is voice tracked. He records his show during the week and it gets loaded into audio vault for the weekend. I wouldn't be surprised if only the veterans at CBS Radio recognized him. He comes in at least once a week (I think).

No bubble is bursting. I don't care if they gave JMF a tin can and a string to record his stuff. Just hearing him on the air again is well worth the wait.

And James Baker is the Producer for Dave Sholin. (As that is the topic here)

LOL. Thank-you, yes I can read. It was someone else who brought up JMF. I just replied.
