James Brown returns to CBS (and other sports TV shuffles)

James Brown, host of Fox's NFL pre and post-game coverage, will return to CBS. Several other notable TV-related moves including Bonnie Bernstein and Armen Keyteyian are mentioned in this USA Today article:

Bernstein is going into radio consulting per the article. Apparently her last sports assignment was as WW1's sideline reporter for SB XL.

The article said it's possible Bradshaw could host; I can't see it. That show needs a stable personality to anchor with the craziness around him. (Actually, Howie Long would be better, but he's too good an analyst to waste introducing Frank Caliendo).

Hmmm...could Dick Enberg be looking elsewhere? Back to NBC if Michaels can't get out of his Disney contract? Or replacing Michaels on ESPN's MNF?

I think that's what irks me most about all these moves... the fact that CBS is splitting up Enberg and Dierdorf, my personal pick as best announcing team, to put Gumbel in Enberg's spot.

I'm not a fan of Gumbel, and I'm really not happy that the Fox studio team is splitting up, but man, Enberg and Dierdorf, except for the few mental lapses Dick has every now and then (not Summerall at the end level bad), really make just about any game worth watching, and splitting them up might make me flip the channel quicker to another game next season when I come upon Gumbel.

I'm upset too to see Dick Enberg drop to the #3 spot at CBS. I'm actually a fan of Greg Gumbel, but I certainly prefer Enberg to the ultra dull Jim Nantz. Would love to see him do the NBC Sunday Night games next year, but it seems like he's staying put at CBS from the articles I've read.

Enberg definitly seems to be the one lost in the shuffle with all the NFL broadcaster changes, but I guess we're stuck with the likes of Jim Nantz and the ever-so-annoying Joe Buck.

Chris Myers or Chris Rose, perhaps?

Chris Myers or Chris Rose, maybe? Both of them already work for Fox Sports/FSN, so it wouldn't be hard to bump one of them up to Fox NFL Sunday.

I'd give Myers the leg up due to his work on FSN's "Pro Football Preview". <P ID="signature">______________

Wow, all I can say is that NFL coverage overall is going to be dramatically different starting next season. I think the average viewer will be a little confused at first. Let's hope the changes that occur will be at least somewhat permanent for the next several years.

I'm unhappy seeing James Brown leave Fox, even though I'm glad he is jumping at an opportunity that he has apparently been looking for. Fox's pregame show has consistently dominated CBS for quite awhile now, and I have a feeling that it will feel the effects of losing Brown next season. And I hope Terry Bradshaw doesn't take over as the guy in charge. He is a great analyst/sidekick, but I can't see him as a smooth host for the show.

I like James Brown and Howie Long, but can't stand 'Hillbilly' Bradshaw and Jimmy Johnson, perpetuating sterotypes of 'Jed and Jethro' with all their talking, hooting, and 'Yee-haw'ing over one another.

Brown will do his usual classy, professional work back at CBS, and before long, people won't even notice Gumbel's absence.

I think Gumbel does good studio work, but have never liked his play-by-play calling. I have a feeling that Enberg is not being 'demoted', but will in fact be moving on...and going to ESPN for 'MNF' sounds like a logical move. After all, ESPN had a history of hiring older play by play guys (Jim Simpson, Jim Kelly, and even, more recently, Pat Summerall filling in for Mike Patrick) before they became the 'young and hip' network

I was thinking Chris Myers too. I also give him the leg up due to the fact that he also host's NASCAR ON FOX pre-race shows.

It should be noted that Dick Enberg is already ESPN's voice of Grand Slam tennis, on loan from CBS. It would not be outside the realm of possibility to see him on ESPN on MNF and/or college basketball.

I wouldn't be surprised if Bradshaw joins Brown at CBS.

Besides, wasn't Bradshaw part of the "NFL Today" team at CBS Sports in the early 1990's??

Also: Although the USA Today article reported that Andrea Kremer was being considered by NBC as sideline reporter for "Sunday Night Football", I think it's more likely Bonnie Bernstein will be hired for that job. Despite her new business to provide services to budding sportscasters, I think she'll have time to be able to squeeze-in "Sunday Night Football". In fact, I'd be very surprised if anyone other than Bernstein becomes sideline reporter for the Sunday-night games. She's the best sideline reporter in the business and NBC's hiring her would be a coup.

How 'bout Al Trautwig?

I know he's under contract with NBC for the AFL and several other sports, but he doesn't have anything whatsoever to do with the NFL.

If not him, then how 'bout Rich Eisen from NFL Network?

Too old. In fact, I'd be surprised if he actually returns AT ALL (let alone return as the No. 2 man at CBS).

Same with sidekick Dan Dierdorf.

Just my opinion :)

Cheers :)

Yep, Bradshaw was at CBS before he made the move to join JB over at Fox. But, as far as Bradshaw, I'm pretty sure he stays at Fox. I'm probably one of the minority in actually preferring The NFL Today to Fox NFL Sunday. If you want more X's and O's, CBS has the better show, even though I can do without Dan Marino's playing nice and being uncritical towards his friends and associates in the NFL. You want the entertainment factor, then it's Fox. I like Pam Oliver's interviews and Frank Caliendo's picks, but I could do without the rest of the show. I catch ESPN's Sunday Morning Countdown in bits and pieces, but who wants to sit through a 2-hour pregame show. However, I do love NFL Primetime, Chris Berman and Tom Jackson make up one of the best broadcasting duos in sports.

Maybe in a couple years, but he's under longterm contract at Fox so
ain't going anywhere. No surprises, Joe.

Yes, he and Dick Butkus were the regulars with Brent Musburger on
the NFL Today from 1990 to '94.

LA Times already reported on Friday that Andrea Kremer got the job
on NBC's Sunday Night package. And Bonnie Bernstein was cut loose by CBS.

What the f*** are you watching, Joe? Next to her father, Bernstein is probably the worst sports reporter/anchor out there. It looks really bad when a big network doesn't renew your contract. That's why she is going on her own now.
Poor kids who'll be seeking her advice.

I'm also a big NFL PrimeTime fan. I just hope ESPN keeps the show now that they no longer have the Sunday Night Football package. I thought I read somewhere that NBC was going to have a highlights show like PrimeTime preceding their Sunday night games, and for some reason I thought that meant that ESPN would be restricted from having an NFL highlights show in the same time slot. Correct me if I'm wrong.

It is great that James Brown is coming back to CBS Sports to be on the NFL Today. Great pick up by CBS Sports. Now I guess the only new face would be James Brown that is if The NFL Today is keeping Dan, Boomer, and Shannon. Looks like a great line-up. Maybe this coming season The NFL Today will shine over FOX's pregame. Also any news on if Deion Sanders might come back? I know he was on The NFL Today before he went back into the NFL, but I don't think CBS might want him but if anything NBC should add him to the pregame show. FOX may or may not want him.

As for ESPN's NFL Sunday Countdown, leave it how it is. They have a great team to talk about the NFL.

You're right. NFL Primetime will now air on Monday nights before "Monday Night Football" because NBC will have a highlights show at 7:00, keeping Primetime from airing in that spot. Can't see why they can't still air it at midnight after SNF.

I don't mean to nit pick, but Musberger was fired by CBS and went to ABC in 1990 (he was fired on April Fool's Day, no less, last CBS broadcast was the Duke-UNLV national title game in 1990). He was on the NFL Today prior to 1990.

Got the years mixed up.
I stand corrected. Of course,
Bryant Gumbel, Bradshaw and Pat O'Brien.

You listed the WRONG Gumbel here. It was Bryant's brother, Greg.
