James T out as morning co-host of WTPS

Long time Miami air personality James T has been forced out of WTPS 1080AM when he refused to "re-negotiate" his contract.

Well placed sources say the decision came from the head of Radio One, Alfred Liggins and caught the local General Manager, Kervin Cleanance completely by surprise.

For those who do not know, James T is an icon in the local Miami black community. He spent many many years as morning personality on WEDR. He made the switch to HOT 105 as afternoon host when WEDR dropped any pretense of being an Urban Contemporary and decided to go straight "Hip-Hop".

After some successful years at HOT 105, James T was lured away with the promise of a 3 year contract with Radio One. One can assume that he was also tempted by the possibility of one day hosting his only nationally syndicated program with Syndication One (a division of Radio One).

Barely half way through his 3 year deal, Alfred Liggins decided to dump James T after WTPS has failed repeatedly to "make the book".

Sadly there has been barely a peep about James T's departure in the local Miami media. Contrast this with the big media hoopla surrounding the departure of local radio icons such as Rick Shaw (who actually hasn't even left yet) and John "Footy" Kross (who actually has returned part-time to WIOD) and it really makes you wonder how someone of James T's caliber can be treated so poorly.

Note to Radio One: Time for a reality check. Once the news of this gets out (and it will get out), you will find that this is probably not the best way to endear yourself to the local Miami black community. If you couldn't make the book with James T, what makes you think you can make it without him?

James T. still has one radio station in Miami that he can go to..103.5 The Beat. Clear Channel should pursue him and give him a shift and the PD position. If the Beat has any chance to go face to face with Hot, they need James T. Anyone disagree.

While the idea should be sound, no-brainer, I doubt with all that is going on with Clear Channel these days, the last thing they would want is another high salary. James T is an awesome long time name in the business & I would think that his phone wouldn't be silent for long. He may not want to leave South Florida, but it may be his only chance to brighten up another market.

What burns me up is this is so typical of radio! The people just don't matter to these mega-conglomerates! James T is known as one of the nicest most talented guys in urban radio. In this case, it would seem the nice guy is finishing last.

It also sucks that more people don't give a damn about it on radio-info.com, but it is what it is.

WTPS couldn't make it with James T... what made them think they could make it without him?

I could see this coming a mile away... why couldn't anyone else at Radio One?
