Jamie and Handel duke it out: "Don't you ever talk to my f-----g kids again!"

Re: Jamie and Handel duke it out: "Don't you ever talk to my f-----g kids again!"

To Tower: You can't replace talk hosts who literally bring in Millions of $ not hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Handel right or wrong is not a DJ, he hosts was has become the #1 morning show on the most listened to News Talk Station in the U.S. He isn't a peer of yours, he occupies a very lofty position in broadcasting. That is why he will not be terminated.

He was way out of line, coming off as the bad guy when Jamie is involved is quite a trick, but he achieved it.
I would look squarely at the Program Director and Market Manager Greg Ashlock. They are obviously sending the wrong message to their staff. This is the second incident of this type in 6 months involving KFI. Funny, never happened in the days of David G Hall & Cox. I think respect was the difference. Robin has no control of her staff, that's the bottom line.

I wonder what Jamie had to say.

If she told this kids to "take off 'ya dummies," then I'd say Handel was crazy and hotheaded and needs to cool it for a while...

If Jamie told the kids some R-rated insults just because it "bugged her" that they were there, and Bill Handel was playing a genuine protective father, which he sounded angry enough to be playing, then I could see him being able to keep his spot after cooling it for a week.

I mean, I'd imagine Handel is saavy ... he's in Market #2... he knows you don't say certain things on the air. What could Jamie have said that would make him so irate that headlines would tout "Bill Handel goes Crazy!"

Somebody posted that KYSR and KFI have had a rivalry for a while in-house (more like a hatefest).... Anyone know the detains of how/why it started?

Maybe it's time to let Handel go and flip Star?

I am shocked, but know I shouldn't be. This should surprise no one considering those who were involved. I couldn't agree more with the comment above, saying how bad you've got to be, to be involved in an incident with Jamie, where she's the victim.
Make no mistake, this has nothing to do with rage, or uncontrolled anger. Bill's behavior has always been the direct result of what he can get away with. This was a case of "DON'T YOU KNOW WHO I AM?!". Bill Handel went down there because he believes he can (yes, and as shameful as it is, he can, but it doesn't make it right). Incidentally, this reminds me of another KFI host who used to let her son treat the halls of KFI/KOST as if it were his own club house. I believe we have the same situation here.
What's more crazy, though, are the posts here commenting on how Bill's right because "she doesn't have any ratings on her loser show"! Irrelevant! The fact that Bill even mentioned it in his tirade, made him look ridiculous. If her ratings were higher, do we believe Bill would've thought everything was OK? More than anything, it shows where his mind is: High ratings means you and your family can treat the entire buliding like it's the house that you built, and everybody who works in that building should feel that "there but for the grace of Bill, go I"! I am happy for his success, but it clearly has created a sense of entitlement that extends far beyond appropriate boundaries.
It's quite simple: The kids affected what was happening on the air on KYSR, no one should tolerate that, and Jamie put a stop to it (no I'm not a pollyanna, I'm sure she was probably rude about it, but so what). Nobody should have to wonder where there producer is when they need something on air, because he's entertaining someone's kids, and Bill's stature in the building should have no bearing on whether or not his behavior was OK. AND for those of you who have supported him, referring to his million dollar status, or his ratings, you are exactly the reason why he believes he can treat people like this.

Re: Jamie and Handel duke it out: "Don't you ever talk to my f-----g kids again!"

Another thought keeps coming to me: This happened during (maybe before) the 8 AM hour; Bill was calm on his last segment, and he left at 8:30 (unless the 8-8:30 segment was taped). Bill is scheduled to go on vacation, Jamie has the worst, least professional and lowest rated major morning show in Los Angeles, maybe the world. Channel 5 just happens to get a tape of the incident to air on Sam Rubin's entertainment segment, and the incident sounds faked (Bill totally out of control, KYSR not just going to commercial or music but instead allowing it all on the air. No mention of it on KFI.

I think it was a set up to gain publicity.

Re: Jamie and Handel duke it out: "Don't you ever talk to my f-----g kids again!"

The cash for the FCC fines could not buy this kind of publicity and isn't it the beginning of a new ratings period? Sounds contrived for sure! And who says that radio drama is dead? Anybody want to do some real drama programs on the radio again? Everything old is new again!

Re: Jamie and Handel duke it out: "Don't you ever talk to my f-----g kids again!"

Nobody Important: I love that screen name. You made some excellent points, sounds like you knew your way around Korea Town:). You're so right, it's a case of "I walk on water". I would expect her to pull this, but Bill knows better. Shades of Dr Laura eh?

As far as faking it, no-way. This was a out-of-control situation. It should have never happened. It's funny, this could never happen in television. It's also part of the "my kid is king" syndrome. Don't even scold my perfect kids. I say put Joe Crummey in that chair for 2 weeks, Handle might get a little nervous.

Re: Jamie and Handel duke it out: "Don't you ever talk to my f-----g kids again!"

How did the "f-bombs" get bleeped before airing? The dump button would not have allowed the second to be removed, and there was no time to hit any "bleep" button if one even still existed. Yet the foul language didn't make it to the air.

Hmm ...

Re: Jamie and Handel duke it out: "Don't you ever talk to my f-----g kids again!"

Right now, radio is in an unrated period (meaning no Arbitron measurement until mid January when the winter '07 book starts). Any bets as to whether CC would've suspended Handel in the middle of the spring of fall book?

Hmm ...

They said on KTLA that they had to add bleeps. So it was probably on KTLA's part but I can't say for sure.

Re: Jamie and Handel duke it out: "Don't you ever talk to my f-----g kids again!"

It's my understanding that no f-bombs went out. All of the CC stations in LA have delays. However their is an aircheck being circulated that has those expletives. My gues is it came from a program channel and not the air channel.

Yes, as someone mentioned earlier, it does sound a lot like when Dr. Laura was doing nights in the old Midtown LA building. Her son was 4 or 5 then and used to blast into the KOST studio when the mic was on during their Lovesongs show upsetting the host. Dr. Laura let him run wild and took great offense at the suggestion that he stop going into KOST's control room or wherever else he wanted.

Handel's girls are twins, but really like an "only child". He's well off and they're completely spoiled. I heard that they ran into every control room in the building that day and were shooed away from most. I'd really like to know what Bill was told about it that set him off. The studios are all pretty much the same in Burbank and he had to know that he was going into a studio that was hot at the time as the on-air light is in the same place outside every room on both the 4th and 5th floors. On the aircheck I heard Jamie didn't really say anything mean to his kids. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a Jamie White fan, far from it, but she was right to tell them to stay out. And yes, she's had her run-in's with KFI people before with screaming matches in the parking lot with KFI's afternoon guys over parking spaces. She and Handel are very alike in the respect that they think they can do whatever they want.

Handel was totally in the wrong, but someone at Star should be punished as well for sending out the aircheck to KTLA and who knows who else. Plus, they should've moved on instead of spending the rest of their show beating it all into the ground. Had I been their PD I would've put a stop to that right away.

Don't worry, he's not even making anyone nervous in Phoenix.

Re: Jamie and Handel duke it out: "Don't you ever talk to my f-----g kids again!"

You know, I was thinking about all of this and it occurs to me that even though Handel has been in radio since the 80's at KABC and then KFI he's NOT really a "radio" guy. As far as I know he's one of those guys that jumped in with little or no training, and it has always showed. He doesn't even breathe like he should. Every time he takes a breath he inhales through is nose loudly. It's truly annoying. What got him the high ratings and high profile morning job has always been his content. But the point I'm trying to make is, that some formal training might have had him thinking twice about doing what he did. Moreover, as a lawyer he should be well aware that you don't threaten to kill someone, and never with witnesses, even if Star has fewer of those witnesses than KFI does...

This was on the air. Management is most pissed at the board op because the dump button was not hit.

Guess Don Barrett was wrong, he say's that the dump button was hit and worked, but the aircheck I heard did sound like it was from the airchain. Since I almost NEVER listen to Star in the morning I didn't hear it live and can't say for sure.

This whole thing was in fact STAGED in my humble opinion. The radio business and all of you who are in it are now fully admitting that you have the same audience demographics as The National Enquirer.

Wonder when the "we apologize for what was said on the Jamie White Show on STAR 98 last Friday" billboards
will appear?

I listen to Handel and he has a good show-all local and well produced. Doubt if it was staged. He was off the last half hour of his show with the rest of the air team mugging his absence with one liners of Handelisms lifted from air checks.

His week off the air starts after his holiday vacation which I believe stared this weekend after his legal show. It airs in LA on KFI ( where I believe it is produced) from 6AM to 11AM. First hour is usually a tape sometimes of the previous weeks last hour. He was in the studio for at least the last couple of hours.

Re: Jamie and Handel duke it out: "Don't you ever talk to my f-----g kids again!"

Handel is okay, I don't like Jamie, but Handel was completely in the wrong here. What the hell were his kids doing in other control rooms on a completely different floor? Wasn't someone watching them? Doesn't CC have office rules about this? Not to mention marching in with the on air light on and blowing his top. Not cool.

And no, it wasn't staged. If it was staged, there would have been no f-bombs. With the thousands and thousands of dollars of fines possible not just for CC but for the personalities involved, they wouldn't take that chance.

Re: Jamie and Handel duke it out: "Don't you ever talk to my f-----g kids again!"

When do the FCC's NAL's start arriving at the station? Or will someone have to complain first about their virgin ears? If nobody complains to the FCC is all forgiven? I would not be surprised at all if nothing happens at the FCC!

Re: Jamie and Handel duke it out: "Don't you ever talk to my f-----g kids again!"

nothing will happen to Handel...he is given a pass because of his religion/race just like Dr. Laura
