Jamie Phillips out at KCVM

Saw a posting on Iowa Broadcasters the KCVM in Cedar Falls has an opening for a new morning talent/programmer so apparently Jamie Phillips is out..details as to why are sketchy and no word on when his last day will be...anyone know anything?????? ???

How long had he been there? I know this is a small company but what are they like to work for? Any thoughts anyone?

Reportedly he had been with Jim since day one of KCVM hitting the air. As far as the company, I've heard good things about them. The Coloff's have 3 properties, KCVM/1650 The Fan/KDNZ in Cedar Falls along with KMCH in Manchester and KIOW in Forest City. Given the glut of corporate take over in our biz, it's nice to hear about a mom & pop operation doing it right.

Hey Scooby,

Are you serious??? Surely you can't be. If "doing it right" means ratings that blow, a misfit talent pool that burned it's bridges with every other station in town, and promotions that includes winning tickets to a local theatre company's production of "Bye Bye Birdie", and live broadcasts at the local library...then, my friend, you were meant for radio from 1963. This station is a mess. Have you heard the music they play? How does a straight segue from Britney Spears "Oops I Did It Again" into "Tell Her About It" from Billy Joel, and into "Word Up" from Cameo sound to you? Then again...if they are "doing it right" - it must sound GREAT.

I am not arguing that Jim Coloff isn't a nice guy. But what he needs to do is get someone in there with at least a little bit of programming and promotions ability. Their morning "show" is constantly interviewing authors of books like "How To Keep Your Kids From Gaining Holiday Weight" or "How To Knit A Patriotic Blanket in Five Easy Lessons." If the stale muzak on their station doesn't drive listeners away...the blathering of the morning show will.

Just because a station isn't owned by a corporate biggie, doesn't mean it should be automatically applauded.

That's all for now...this lesson of Radio 101 is over.

The Stick

Stick;

You seem to have the knack of dogging every radio station that has ever broadcast. Is their any station in the state of Iowa you approve of ?

I tell it like it is. If you can't handle it, don't read it. And by the sound of it...you can't HANDLE IT.

The truth will set you free.

Yeah, I noticed on their website the GM is part of the morning show. What role does he play and is he the reason for the interviews with the authors?

How about, "you can't handle the truth!"

Yes, continue to hide behind cliches and catch-phrases, rather than answering the actual question. You must be practicing for a political debate!

If "doing it right" means ratings that blow
,
No argument there

a misfit talent pool that burned it's bridges with every other station in town
,

Any specifics, or is this conjecture on your part?

and promotions that includes winning tickets to a local theatre company's production of "Bye Bye Birdie", and live broadcasts at the local library
...

Hey, it's local. At least they are out and about and have stuff to toss to the listeners. Not everyone can get the public excited about being the 50th nationwide caller for a chance at a thousand dollar payoff.

I am not arguing that Jim Coloff isn't a nice guy.

Possibly, and I am not a learned scholar like you Stickman, but I am assuming that is the very point of him tossing Phillips and re tooling the morning show.

Their morning "show" is constantly interviewing authors of books like "How To Keep Your Kids From Gaining Holiday Weight" or "How To Knit A Patriotic Blanket in Five Easy Lessons."

Sounds like a morning show geared to a female demographic. Nothing shocking, family stuff. Sure, boring as all get out, but I do not see the gates of hell opening up.

Just because a station isn't owned by a corporate biggie, doesn't mean it should be automatically applauded.

What should be applauded is the fact that Jim Coloff does not consider his talent disposable like the corporate drones do. Sure, he held on to Phillips way too long, but it sure is nice to see one station appriciate the employees.
And before you even ask, Stickman - No, I do not work for Coloff, but from what I have heard about him and the content of his character, I am sending him my stuff and really hope to be a part of a new Mix 96. It would be nice to go to work every day without having a dark "cloud" hanging over my head.

From Wall Cloud :
Beware the general manager who has his hands in everything

Better that than a GM that would rather be out golfing and has no clue about what is going on at the station. Just my opinion.

And from Yocco:
Yeah, I noticed on their website the GM is part of the morning show. What role does he play and is he the reason for the interviews with the authors?

No, that is all Jamie from what I have heard. And that is also something unique.. An owner that actually participates in the broadcasting. When was the last time any of us had a GM or owner that even knew where the booth was located ?

I have a sinking feeling that a crap storm will now erupt for me defending Mix, but I personally admire them and am looking forward to seeing what they will do next.

Undoubtedly, and there are those GMs out there, but those are few and far between. Personally, I'd rather have a GM that couldn't find the control room with a map and spent his time in the sales area where he can have a far greater impact.

The official announcement of his departure was made on Monday morning, no word on a replacement, but it was said that his last day with MIX would be in December around the first week or so. Rumour has it that it was told to the staff that it was an "amicable separation" according to my sources...but who really knows when these things happen. No official word on what Jamie's plans are yet, but Coloff is looking to hire a new morning guy, possibly to also handle the PD duties.
