Jammer on 1000 khz?

As alluded to previously, I've been in Florida for the past week and a half. I'll probably post some bandscan highlights later, but one of the most notable developments has been apparent jamming on 1000 kHz?

What I've been hearing has been described in previous threads as a "wobbling" sound. Some of you may recall that it first turned up about 5 or 6 years ago on 930. IIRC, it was on for perhaps about 2-3 months, then disappeared. Then not long afterwards, it turned up on 1550 for a similar length of time. Since the noise was primarily only audible in the southeast, the suspicion was that it was coming from Cuba.

That certainly would fit this latest "episode". I first heard it last week at my sister's place near Fort Myers. There it was quite strong. A couple of days later, we were at a hotel on Hutchinson Island, about an hour north of Palm Beach. The noisemaker was fairly strong there, as well, but not as strong as on the Florida west coast. Now we're at our usual Pensacola area getaway spot on the Gulf. I can still hear this "mystery signal", but it's noticeably weaker than at the other two locations.

In all three of these locations, I've only heard the signal at night. No trace of it in the daytime. I've heard it on all three radios I have with me (SRF-37, ATS-505, and Superadio II) as well as in the car. Otherwise, the channel contains WMVP and XEOY. Basically taking turns on top with fair to good signals.

Has anyone else heard this? Any ideas of what's going on....or why? If indeed this is jamming from Cuba, I'm having a tough time trying to figure out what sort of programming is on 1000 that the Cubans would find to be objectionable.

Cuba has radio broadcasts of their local baseball games all the time. I've heard them on both R. Progreso and R. Rebelde. I've never paid close attention, but I think they're more common on Rebelde.

Questions:
You said that you are only hearing them at night.
1) Do they fade as skywave or do they exhibit consistent signals?
2) Have you DF'ed them with your SupeRadio from southwest and southeast Florida,
and can you draw lines from each location to a single point in Cuba or elsewhere?

1.) Fairly consistent, but there is occasional fading
2.) No. One of the problems is that at each location, there were electrical noise sources that I had to null.

I heard it a few times last night (1/24) under a fairly strong WMVP...around 2300 CT. Was
driving on I-40 in Nashville...from downtown to Priest Dam area FWIW.

Interesting that you were hearing it around Nashville. I know some avid WSCR/670 listeners who travel. They're of the consensus opinion that when going south or southeast from Chicago, Nashville is typically about where WSCR gets overtaken by Cuba's R. Rebelde.

And on the global tuners receiver in Northen Ireland WSCR gets clobbered by Rebelde. That station really gets out.

It was tripping the seek function on my car radio daytime in southwest Florida last week!

Back OT....Tonight the noisemaker on 1000 is very strong at my current location near Pensacola. I can't even completely null it. Assuming that it's still going when I get home the week after next, I wouldn't be surprised to hear it with WMVP nulled.

I assume that you're hearing one of the "Cuban wobblers", and in fact I've heard the wobbler on 1000 up here in Michigan under WMVP too at times since it really stands out. Assumed to be nothing more than a flaky transmitter as opposed to intentional jamming. They are fairly well known and have been heard on numerous channels over the years (i.e. 650)

Very audible in Columbus last night behind ESPN 1000. A few times, it broke out on top. As I've said before, WMVP is a consistent blaster here on a nightly basis and under usual circumstances, very little if anything else is ever heard on the channel. But when that signal came through, it sounded like a bad sound effect from the Twilight Zone straight out of 1961.

The "wobbler" was off one night earlier this week, only to return the following night. Last night (Feb 2), it was particularly strong.
