Jammer on 730?

I have heard this same frequency random heterodyne on 1100 kHz, WTAM was well aware of it too. The warble cadence is not precise but predictable. It almost sounds like an oscillator automatic frequency control (AFC) of some sort or the oscillator is just unstable. I don’t know how eastern European transmitter manufacturer’s frequency synthesis works or what stability methods they use if any, but just the way it sounds and what has been heard before, it makes me think it is simply a malfunction. It doesn’t take a lot of power to wreak havoc with a heterodyne over a wide area.

For the record, right around sunset this evening, the "wobbler" on 730 was blasting in here (near Pensacola), louder than recent evenings. Checked 930 also, but nothing unusual there.

Sidebar question: Are the Cubans still jamming 1550 like they were a couple of years back? Haven't heard any trace of it this trip....nor did I hear it the last time I was here in August.

As far as we know, 1550 stopped being jammed when 1) the WRHC transmitter was moved out of Biscayne Bay onto land, thus no longer getting a bit of signal to Cuba, and, 2) WRHC became a brokered station and droppped the Cadena Azul strident anti-Castro material when Salvador Lew left as PD and Manager... around 15 years ago.

Thanks,

Actually you may recall 1550 was being jammed (and discussed in a thread in this forum) as recently as 2-3 years ago. Very strong in the the Orlando area on a couple of trips I had there in '07 and/or early '08, but I couldn't hear it here near Pensacola. Nor do I recall offhand hearing it anywhere in Florida since.

The 730 interference was very strong at 2 AM here in Lexington KY this morning. My loop antenna showed the strongest signal was coming from about 160-170 degrees which is in the direction of Cuba from here. I still think it is coming out of Cuba (or from the North-NWest...Canada or over the pole?!?!). If others of you have loop antennas, try to determine the direction from your location. Maybe we can triangulate the source of this mystery...

A former Army man that was in signal has confirmed that this is Indeed jamming.
He used to deal with this very same sound over in Europe.

I know it's coming from Cuba. It's almost noon and I can hear it now. It's strongest in the direction of SSW.

My loop confirms it too.

Still begs the question of what could be they jamming....and why? Maybe they want to blow out sports talk from Memphis or Lansing. Or perhaps they're offended by farm reports from Worthington, MN or Goodland, KS. ;D

There is nothing on most of those channels to jam.

The criteria for jamming by Cuba would be: news content that includes Spanish language news that is not aired in Cuba and which would be unflattering to the regime and system and/or Spanish language commentaries about Cuba specific to the Socialist govenment such as its treatment of political prisoners, killing of dissidents, etc.

The only stations with a significant amount of either are WAQI 710 and VOA / Radio Martí Program 1180 & 540.

There is no "embarassing" station on 620 or 930, the channels this noise is most commonly on historicly. There is none on 730, the most recently reported warbler. 730, in fact, is very strange as the oly significant Northern Hemisphere signal is XEX in Mexico City, an all sports station. There is nothing in Colombia that warrants blocking, as the major 730 is well inland and never has generated a big signal... of course, the fact that they produce the noise daytime as well as at night would limit the stations of interest to just those in South Florida...

Maybe we had a plain old fashioned hetrodyne by a Cuban slightly off 1550 against the local daytimer on 1550 in the Tampa Bay area.

We had a bit of this when the Cayman Islands had a 10 kw AM on 1555.

Just took a stroll on the beach with the Eaton 10, and there it was. Very faint, but audible and unmistakable. 11:10am local time. There was another barely audible signal on the channel, but I couldn't identify it (perhaps WSTT, Thomasville, GA... 5kw ND about 200 miles from here).

Not to change the subject but Cyberdad, since you're at that part of the Gulf coast, what can you get daytime on the X band?

No problem, gar fla

There's a local...or semi-local...on 1620 from Pensacola. Fair signal at best from about 20 miles away. Then there's a very weak 1640 from Biloxi....about 80-90 miles west of here (but not via a salt water path). Nothing else that's readily apparent daytime. Although I haven't tried getting away from the building (and the overhang on our balcony) to check out what else might be on the x band directly on the beach. I also haven't really hung out on the x band very much after sunset, but the strongest thing I'm hearing seems to be talk or sports talk on 1700.

I'll see if I can do a little better during the forthcoming week.

Thanks for the report!

Talk or sports talk on 1700? That's a mystery.

1620 and 1640 can be heard during the day here out at the Gulf.

I'm also wondering if you get any signal on 1660. Next time you try and if it's slow jazz or old classics, it has to be from Marco Island, Florida.

It Could Also Be KKLF Richardson, TX

They have been repeating 1310 The Ticket For A Long Time Now.

Im Surprised KVNS Doesn't Dominate Over There.

But KKLF and KBGG are hundreds of miles away over land. They should be impossible to get in the daytime from there.

And I'm wondering if a trace of KVNS can be heard there in the day too.
