Jammer on 730?

I find it unusual that you don't hear 670 in southern VA. In northern VA I hear the 670 though rather weak.

Is it weak because of Caribbean interference or just a weak signal?

Even as far north as Ohio in the 1990s until as recently as 2000, WSCR (then WMAQ, of course) was susceptible to being absolutely clobbered by one of Fidel's blasters from suburban Havana. Chicago could always be heard decently well in northern and northwest Ohio, but there were times in Columbus that Cuba was so loud it *completely* blocked Chicago. The maddening thing was it wasn't every night. Unfortunately this came during the height of the Bulls' championship runs!
I don't remember hearing the Cuban station much in the past 10 years. Thank goodness.

I watched the Bulls championship game on cable TV at a friend's house at that time, and didn't noticed any interference on 670 at night at the same time. (I wasn't AM Dxing at that time) Now I am beginning to think...Fidel hates sports broadcasts???

Fidel certainly doesn't dislike baseball broadcasts; there are many baseball games on both 670 and 710.

In ref to the Chicago stations, the only one I can receive on a semi-regular basis is 780 WBBM; 890 WLS is only rarely heard faintly in the background of Cuba.

btw- I too am hearing the "jamming" (?) warbling noise on 1040; I have a local 1040 which a relatively strong night signal, but can hear the noise in the background of WHBO 1040 ESPN radio.

WHBO is clearly audible here daytime (Perdido Key. FL/AL state line). Invisible at night. No DX for me last night...family stuff. I'll check out both 930 and 1040 tonite and post a "wobbler update!.

Wobbler update for this evening (6/24) from the beach at the FL/AL border....

930: Noisemaker was there. Moderate-strong. Usually on top of the channel, but other stuff clearly audible underneath.

1040: The noisemaker was on top of the channel just before sunset. Not so after. Tonight WHO was absent, but the slop that was there was usually enough to force the noisemaker to the background. Music in Spanish was dominating. Not sure what station it was. Definitely not WHBO.

As for the Chicago blowtorches. Officially I was 0 for 6. I might have caught WYLL for a couple minutes on day power, but I'm inclined to doubt it. I did hear a couple minutes' worth of religious talk. But given that there was no trace of the other Chicagoans, I suspect it probably was something other than WYLL.

The Mexicans were weaker than two nights ago, with the exception of XEEP, which was blasting in as usual. As for Canada, I tried 860 and 740. A total mess on both...the former also with WWL splatter (and a weak, but audilble R. Reloj). However, despite the 870 splatter, WCBS was able to break through. WFAN also in, but not WABC.

An update on earlier replies---I am now hearing 2 Spanish language broadcasts on 670 and no WSCR 670! It's odd as I did heard WSCR earlier a week or two.

Only one 670 here in Pensacola tonight. Cubans blasting in....no WSCR, no R. Rumbos, or anything else.

Back to the original topic. Wobbler strong on 930 this evening, but no trace of it on 1040. (This is my last night here and hence my last "update").

Don't know what caused my post from last evening to disappear. But to recap....

Friday was my last evening on the gulf coast. No Chicagoans present. There was a strong signal right before sunset on 1160 with right wing talk show. No ID heard, but I don't think it was WYLL given that there was no trace of the other Chicago big boys.

Noisemaker strong on 930....absent on 1040.

Tonight (Saturday), I'm in Memphis. If I come across anything noteworthy I'll post early next week.

Speaking of Memphis a friend of mine who lives there used to listen to WLS alot at night going back to the Rock days. Anyway he said he can hardly hear it anymore with all the Cuban interference.

WLS was rather weak, but definitely listenable in Memphis last night. Easily on top with Cuba underneath. WGN had the best Chicago signal, but was only fair at best. WSCR and WBBM were covered up by splatter from strong locals on 680 and 790. WMVP was in the mix (but barely) on 1000. Same goes for WVON on 1690. I was picking up religious talk with a fair signal on 1160, but didn't hang around long enough to identify it.

Strongest out of town signal was WHAS, hands-down. Biggest surprise in my half hour or so with the SRF-37 turned on was finding CFZM on top of usual 740 "top dog" KRMG last night....easily audible despite the local on 730.

Finally, back to the original topic: The noisemaker was fair-to-strong on 930. No trace of it on 1040.

(I was actually at a hotel in Southaven, MS....about ten miles south of downtown Memphis).

The Hampton Inn of Southaven?

We usually overnight in or near Memphis on our trips to visit my daughter and family in Houston, and don't arrive in Memphis until after dark. Deliberate of course, but don't tell my wife. DX rules!

WHAS seems to have a consistantly good signal in Memphis and west TN in the evenings.

While driving in West TN & the Memphis area, I hear 1160/WYLL with a nice signal prior to shifting to its night pattern.

When WYLL shifts to it's night pattern do you completely lose it for the night near Memphis?

Fairfield Inn next door to the Hampton. I don't recommend the place! I'm lifetime platinum with Marriott. and usually use the Courtyard up the street, but they were full so I went with the Fairfield. That particular Courtyard is a good hotel. As are most Fairfields....but not this one!

As for WYLL, I don't think that's what I was hearing on 1160....unless they "forgot" to switch to the night pattern/xmtr. This was around 9pm CDT.

Could have been WCRT here in Nashville. The format is right and the nighttime antenna pattern is not unreasonable for decent reception in Memphis.

I live about 30 miles northwest of Nashville & in WCRT's nighttime null. Up here it's quite common to hear WYLL with a fairly decent signal at night. Though the pattern does suggest they do better in Nashville than in Memphis.

I have alway assumed the signal disappears after the shift to the night pattern, but I don't remember listening to 1160 after the switch.

Maybe a Memphis area reader knows.
