JAMN 94.5 CHANGES POSITIONER/SLOGAN

During the mix shows tonight, caught this at the tail end of a new music promo:

"#1 for Hip Hop and Hit Music"...

Of course, it used to be "#1 for Hip Hop and R & B".

So Jamn's switch (or "slow conversion" if you will) to a full-fledged CHR seems to be in full swing...

Does this mean they are planning to drop R & B entirely? I could never imagine Jamn playing the Jonas Brothers, but they have already begun to add the likes of Brittney, Lady Gaga and Kevin Rudolf (albeit sparingly), so nothing would surprise me at this point.

Also: I don't pay much attention to Kiss 108 anymore... have they begun to tweak the Kiss playlist/imaging as well? (Perhaps making it sound more like the Kiss from the late-90's so as not to cannibalize its own audience when Jamn goes full-fledged CHR)

It seems that Jamn is going the direction of those "Hits and Hip Hop" stations, like B-96 in Chicago, and Wired 96.5 in Philadelphia. While such stations are positioned as CHRs, they are essentially still Rhythmic stations that play less R & B and more Dance music.

Same with "Hot 106" in Providence..."#1 for Hip Hop". At least they are calling it what it is. Jam'n has never been a true urban and never will.

They may sense the possibility of another CHR coming (CBS) and they want to get ready to compete with it.

What I would have done is add some Urban AC tracks.

Having once worked for a cluster with two full fledged CHRs, one leaning more Hot AC and the other more Rhythemic, this could be very bad for Kiss 108.

JAMN has seen some softening of its audience in the PPM era and CC is reacting to that by moving in a more "CHR" direction. Personally, I don't know that it's the best strategy because - as Garrett eluded to - they run the risk of getting too close to Kiss.

This reaction may signify some sense that CBS is actually giving thought to installing a new CHR in the market. Had they done nothing, JAMN's programmers may have seen it as inviting CBS to do just that. This way, they make some adjustments based on the latest ratings and also continue to tighten Clear Channel's one-two block on all things rhythmic/pop in Boston.

But, again, it could backfire. If they go too pop, they dip into Kiss' demos. And, if there's anyone shrewd over at CBS Radio in Boston, they could easily respond with an urban leaning format (not unlike Hot 93.7 in Hartford or WPGC Washington) to capture those listeners that JAMN risks leaving behind. As well as some others.

Clear Channel is walking a tightrope here. To be fair, they've done it successfully for years - but every time they make adjustments they risk falling into the net. Which would be fun to see, by the way.

best move for them would have been to try to pick up their '90s audience by going classic hip-hop/90's hip-hop.
"Classic hip-hop"....Boy, if that ain't an oxymoron! P=) ;D P=)

That's already on their HD-2. It's called "Old School", '80s and '90s rap/hip-hop.
