How far north into New Hampshire and Maine can Boston's Jam'n 94.5 be heard. I know about the radio-locator maps, but I would like to know from first hand exeperience.
______________

>Back when I was young(late 80's early 90's) and loved their format...i use to listen to it in Concord..albeit staticy, but it was listenable. I'd also pick it up occasionally in Tilton, Belmont, Franklin. I use to look forward to going to Concord just so I could listrn. I had a friend who worked at a daycare near downtown Concord and her and all her friends would listen to nothing else. This was in the days before Mix 94.1 and Wjyy were CHR.

I can't speak for Concord but I do know my reception with them was spotty on my Sony Walkman in Manchester, NH back on May 1st. Otherwise, their signal is marginal once I reach Seabrook, NH on I-95 north. There's been a time or two where the signal pops back in for a bit at the York toll plaza in southern Maine (I-95).

Speaking of New Hampshire reception, what about the New Hampshire Public Radio station on 94.5 FM? I pick it up sometimes with the same Walkman in the north end of Brattleboro, VT.

I know for a fact, as of May '04. Jam'n 94.5 could be heard in Lyndonville, VT in the parking lot and near the tennis courts of Lyndon State College! Elevation around 1200 ft and 40 miles south of the Canadian border.

I am not sure how, but the signal has been there since 1999 when I started college there.

damn you beat me to it. I have also gotten jamn 94.5 here at lsc. I think its more dx based though because at the same time you can get wbcn as well.
other than that I know jamn 945 can make it up to almost white river jct on good car radios on both 89 and 91. theres a little gap where jamn won't come in around exit 3-5 on 91 due to some crappy LP station
btw which parking lot? stonehenge or vail? I'll give it a try. I know I got wbcn with static once up college road and in wheelocks parking lot. I'll have to drive up burke mtn or mt washington one of these days to see what I get on my car radio

A relatively new LPFM station at 94.7 in Concord totally screws up JAMN reception in the downtown area and it's weak in the south end. However, without the classical (and unwelcome) intrusion of 94.7 - JAMN used to be Walkman listenable in central Concord.

For me, it was an unwelcome introduction to the world of LPFM. Not to mention the unnecessary new 103.1 translator of the (ahem) Mill from Manchester. That one screws up reception of Oldies 103.3 in Concord.

*Back on topic*

In the car, JAMN seems to do okay until Tilton and Belmont.

Comes in just fine through southern NH - Walkman spotty in Manchester because of the valley its in, but does fine there in the car. Comes in great in the Nashua and Salem areas and does fine in most of Rockingham County, except for Portsmouth - as it faces northward toward the Piscataquog River and Maine.

Into Maine, it seems to come in as far north as York and is usually lost somewhere in Wells. Have picked it up on the coast near Boothbay - thanks to the lack of land in between there and Boston.

I don't know of any NHPR station on 94.5. I know they have an app for a tx on 94.5 in Plymouth....NHPR has a pretty powerful station in Keene on 90.7...I also know of 94.5 WJAN in Sunderland, VT...but they are just a class A.

That would probably be W233AR, a Vt. Public Radio translator that signed on in Brattleboro sometime last year. Prior to that, WJMN could be heard in parts of the Brattleboro area, dpending on your elevation.
______________

Being Boston stations, there is no real obligation to protect WJMN or WODS's signals that far north (outside their reasonable service contour.)

People are making the same stink here in Portland about an LPFM ruining WTOS' reception. Them's the breaks, I guess.
______________

Legally speaking of course, you are right. But it still stinks for the casual listener. Especially those who enjoy a certain format that is not offered in the local market. It may be legal, but we don't have to like it.

I was someone who was against the entire LPFM concept. My argument was that the dial is crowded enough in many parts of the country - and most of the LPFMs feature useless programming. Although 94.7 in Concord is not an example of this - most LPFMs seem to be religious broadcasters, usually broadcasting from afar.

Hardly in the public interest.
