I recall walking into their Rt6/Farmington studios in early 1978 to applly for the position of Chief Engineer which I got. It was 7pm in the evening and the phones at Jamz910 were ringing off the hook. That station had a huge following for a while.

I remember they had "Dr." Phillip Duncan doing Morning Drive. He got his start as a Reggae DJ on what was then known as Latino 1230. The day JAMZ 910 fired him they had to have Hartford Police escort him out of the building. He was replaced by the syndicated Ed Lover and Dr. Dre show from HOT 97 in New York City. That was dropped and they went to a local morning team - Mark Dennis & Loundon Williams. DJ Loundon would later work at the now defunct POWER 104.1 WPHH. Other DJs on JAMZ 910 I remember were Jackie Torres and they brought in Rickey Ricardo from WBLS 107.5 in NYC.
In October 2000 Dr. Phillip Duncan started Blaze Communications and began leasing time on WNTY 990 in Southington 72 hours/week (6AM-6PM Monday-Saturday). He was quite the character and wasn't an honest man. If he was on the phone with a client he would make the DJ cut-off the song and play the client's ad. Then they would start the song over. On more than one occasion he tried to sell WNTY. He claimed he did not know you couldn't sell something you did not own. He tried to say they were broadcasting from a studio in Hartford even though he was broadcasting from the WNTY Broadcast House at 440 Old Turnpike Road in the Plantsville section of Southington. Once he told me I could pick up a prize I won from Insane Irving's in Bristol the day after I won the prize. My mom and I went down to the store and the owner Norm couldn't understand why he would have my prize and that he didn't even know Dr. Phillip Duncan. My mom called the station and the woman on the phone was very apologetic. Dr. Phillip Duncan called her back the next day and apologized and promised the prize would be at the store the next day, which it was. My mom never bought his apology and from that day forward she didn't have a nice word to say about anyone from WNTY even after Duncan was ousted from the station and taken over by Charlie Profit. Duncan also let his DJs smoke weed in the studios (one Sunday afternoon Polka Patti-Ann Jakubiak even mentioned on the air she found a joint in the studio). And after JAMZ 910 ended Dr. Duncan began stealing airtime on WNTY (remember he was only leasing til 6PM) and was running announcements after 6PM in between music that the new Blaze 990 was coming soon and so were your favorite JAMZ 910 DJs.
Today Dr. Phillip Duncan is a chef and was on an episode of Better Connecticut a few years ago.

JAMZ 910 was THE pioneer in playing Hip-Hop in Connecticut. I joined when the station was located in Rt. 6 in Farmington. The station manager/part owner asked me to come to be an Account Executive while I was a car salesman. The entire state was freaking out because there was a Hip-Hop station actually in Ct.
Needless to say, I sold tons of advertising since businesses that marketed to the particular geographic finally had a directed way to reach them. I remember when the Janet Jackson concert was coming to Hartford. I called the promoters and got the ads FROM KISS radio, and that was all she wrote. Philip Duncan was there, along with Mark Dennis, and others. We laid the groundwork for Hot 93.7. We did quite well for an AM station since we were the ONLY outlet for this music!

Let's not forget WRCQ "Greater Hartford's 91Q" which was a competitor of WDRC-AM 1360. WRCQ is now Rock103.5 Fayetteville NC.
