Power is officially screwed now. KISS is beating them to death in every demo,...and now with JAMZ on a great signal...they're done. As far as JAMZ...they NEED to get SNAKE for AM drive....and I also hear KADEN from KISS hasn't signed his deal, and now they're pressuring him to do so. They'd be stupid not to try to snag talent from 'ZZP A return for Kid and Rueben? Maybe,...I've been hearing about that too. Either way, this results with Power getting the shaft...time to unwrap those ghetto ass city transits buses boys. bye bye.

People are counting Power out as if all the hip-hop listeners are in Tempe, Mesa, and Gilbert, and there's no west valley. This is going to be a battle, but Power won't be knocked out in the first round.

Sometimes it's not the signal that counts, but the programming. Ask Univision Radio and 105.9, which clearly ISN'T the best Spanish-language signal in town. But they still keep on with those high numbers.

Signal DOES matter, and that's the reason KZZP's numbers are rising.

It may be a combination of signal + promotion + execution. Where would KHOT be if it wasn't for their cross-promotion with Univision TV and being local in some dayparts? They would probably be trailing KLNZ, which has a much better signal (I know I'm comparing Spanish-language radio to the hip-hop battle, but it shouldn't be a much different scenario). I agree that 101.5 Jamz has the signal advantage and (with the support of CBS) the promotions money, but some listeners may think Jamz's music selection is too "pop" for their tastes and stick with Power, despite signal deficiencies.

It might be a surprise. Jamz may take more listeners away from Kiss than Power. Who knows, as newer forms of music distribution erodes the 12-34 demographic of terrestrial radio that these stations are targeting.

KHOT is #1 because of Piolín in the Morning. The local dayparts are much lower rated. And the morning show was #1 long before Univision owned the station.

Signal does matter when you have competition.

For example Tucson's Rhythmic KOHT has a weak signal. But there is virtually no other Rhythmic station in the market, so that station does well.

Then you have Phoenix which has two Rhythmics and a Rhythmic leaning CHR. With three stations aimed at the same audience, they will pick one that doesn't drop off in their area.

KHOT has no competition. They are the only Rhythmic Tucson has. The only next hip-hop station is KRQQ, which is very balanced as a CHR, if not a little rock leaning.

You're referring to KOHT. Eric & David are discussing KHOT 105.9 in Phoenix.

(EDIT: Spongebag7890 corrected his message right after I posted the above.)

KRQQ and KOHT are both owned by CC, so it makes sense that they try to keep KOHT from cannibalizing KRQQ (and vice-versa).

This will give KZZP a REAL opportunity to be the ONLY mainstrem top 40 in the market. KISS should really think of leaning this way. I can only see things going up for them, now that there are 2 urbans :)

Why would they want to lean more mainstream? If anything they want to sound more urban. Taking them out of the Rhythmic sound will take them out of their audience that is listening to them for that music, which is a very, very good amount.

It would behoove them to lean more mainstream. As I had mentioned in another thread, there simply isn't room in this market for three stations that play (primarily) the same or similar music... especially in the urban genre. Remember KZZP, Y95 and Power 92, only one survived in the early 90s and I think only one will survive here as it is currently.

It boggles the mind why terrestrial radio makes the decisions they do... especially CBS.

but that was the 90's, hasn't phoenix changed since then?

There's no one in Phoenix wanting to listen to a "true" Top 40 station, that's why it would flop. They best advertise their a off to win. Switching to a format that the Phoenix demographics don't listen to won't do good to their ratings--it would do just as bad and good as flopping to Jams. Besides they may come out first anyway.
