Jan 2013 PPMs

As always looking at these numbers make me wish for the days when the PPMs showed "everything"

WNCI and WCOL continue their success at the top despite mostly voice tracked programming.

WTVN - WHAT is going on there? They did see a rebound from the Holiday book but still.. The River is beating you with it's Class A running Christian AC (Folks at Clear Channel can't be happy about that).

Most of WODC's listeners have went back into hibernation for another 10 months... Typical post Christmas drop.

CD101 err CD 102.5 beating WRKZ ... seriously time to change 99.7's format..

The Brew seems to be holding steady.

WHOK seen a little drop -- but not to shocking..

Wink 107.1 -- Nothing new.. Around the same as usual.. Psst go ahead and flip to CBS Sports Network -- No one will notice. [Outside of us radio geeks]

WMNI -- Time to keep the News on AM and flip the FM ... by the way have you built out your CP yet? Nope..Get on it! [Then flip to CHR or Jack].

WJKR err WTOH -- The Answer is well... Based on Facebook has at least 1,000 listeners.. As usual ratings don't really matter to much to Salem -- so I can't say their failing -- their doing exactly what Salem wants and that's to provide an outlet for that programming in Columbus.

Why kill WMNI-FM when it's the one actually getting ratings? The AM showed up as a 0.0

Sorry the listing I saw online had it as a 0.3.. I see in the Tom Taylor email it got a 0.0... Wow less listeners than WYTS? Still I think the news belongs on AM and the FM could be purposed elsewhere. Naturally no one is going to listen to the AM if the FM has the same 'exact' thing.

Ain't that the truth! Hopefully Nielsen will reinstate publishing of the full station list when they take over Arbitron soon. They have more of a history of (publicly) publishing ratings than Arbitron has. Everyone knows about "the Nielsens." Would love to see how Mix, Rewind, Sunny, the Fan and others are doing.

While it of course varies by market, political talk seems to be on the wane, even on FM. There are probably multiple factors at work there. And without the morning numbers we don't know how much impact Conners' retirement had on TVN.

Indeed, but they won't.

Well, at 2.7 they are steady from last month, but that's *down* significantly from where they had been prior to that.

Yes, obviously WMNI, which is stuck at a virtually non-existent .3 *again*, should go Jack or something else. Maybe they are fantasizing that the upcoming signal improvements will help. Fat chance. Columbus just isn't large enough for an all-newser.

I explained in another thread why that sudden brief mega-surge in new Likes, followed by a sudden complete drop-off in new Likes to near zero, is bogus, at least as far as representing listenership (especially local).

As if any further evidence is necessary re 98.9 the Answer's Facebook Likes sham, I note that their cume has actually gone down every month since they've been 100% The Answer:

Dec '12:  24,300
Hol  '12:  18,800
Jan '13:  14,700

But I guess if serving in the market's public interest is not in Salem's mission statement, or necessary for them to make money, they might as well fall to zero.  I get your points, Matt (other thread), but I just can't see how this serves Columbus.

They could quite possibly hit zero.. Would not shock me..kinda like I am not surprised WMNI-A is at rock bottom... I'm what one could call a Christian but I don't really like that kind of radio Salem does (Progressive Right Wing talk) [which was why when the rumors went around I really hoped they would have brought a Fish to town instead -- even though I know the folks at CVO would yell at me for such thoughts - I like healthy radio competition, keeps everyone doing GREAT product].

The few times I listened to "The Answer" (outside of the Sign On) like election night for a little bit I couldn't stand the awful job at automation (cutting off things, dropping into breaks at the wrong time.. out of things at the wrong time etc..)

If I had my way 98.9 would go back to Channel Z days or back to Jack FM ... Of course I also liked their "young country style" days (as Wild Country 98.9) back in the 90s.. That was a great format too!

No one in radio is about serving the public interest anymore.. That went out the doors years ago.

Radio in the 21st century is first and for most a business sad to say.

I still hold out hope the folks though at NABCO will do something with 103.9 once they move the tower site to the west side. [But I fear they will hold onto the hope of a News Radio format for a while longer].. and even if they did change what would it be "another form of satellite rock" ... since out side of 99.7.. 103.9 and 920 have been satellite for years [When WMNI was standards they ran satellite and prior to that when they flipped to "Real Country" which was off the bird].

Of course with 106.7's recent shares.. Shame Clear Channel won't try a Jack FM there :)

Sad to say, The Blitz will never flip as long as Hal Fish is there. No big surprises here in this month's PPMs.

Only surprise which isn't a surprise to me since they do a great job is The River pulling the highest share it's ever had to my knowledge.. Great to see a small local station be up there near the top.

Probably. I tried doing some research online. I couldn't find too much in terms of ratings from years past, but I did find that WWCD had a 3.5 rating for the Fall 1995 period.

I mentioned in another topic.. but kudos to WCVO (The River) for their highest share ever I believe.

Well it deserves repeating. Quite an accomplishment -- and it's local. Maybe they even topped Sunny.

Is the WWCD rating of 3.7 the highest in their station's history?

More recently than the 1995 3.5 billf82 found, I see that they had a 3.6 in April, 2011. But of course that still falls a tad short of the 3.7.

I didn't remember them being that high. Usually I always saw them in the 1-2 share range.

But kudos to them. Hope they keep up the good work.

Not sure why there is so much hatred for The Blitz.

I happen to love their music format. Just wish they would play fewer commercials. There is enough bubble gum pop music, soccer mom music, and moldy classic rock on the dial already. The station is in a bit of a ratings rut right now. They'll bounce back eventually.

IMO managing to get out of the 3's only once in 15 months constitutes more than "a bit of a ratings rut."  And even that was just barely -- a 4.1 in October 2012 -- then quickly back down into the mid-low 3's.  In the past the station had been routinely in the 5's, and sometimes 6's, but now they've been struggling for 15 months, unsuccessfully, to get out of the threes.  And we're talking a big signal in a market that doesn't have many, which should be a BIG advantage.  IMO it's definitely time to totally dump their stale 21-year-old format.  But they won't.  The local operators in Columbus are kind of strange.

I don't think it's hatred for The Blitz as much as it's hatred for Hal Fish.

I don't "hate" Fish, I just find his and Nabco's obstinance -- and insistence on programming largely to their own tastes, annoying and unfortunate for Columbus, especially since big signals are few here compared to similar-sized markets.
