Jan Jeffries Out at Cumulus

The controversial Jan Jeffries has left Cumulus. No surprise with the Dickeys gone. Most of Jan's Cumulus years were spent at Cumulus headquarters here in Atlanta.

Nice, don't think he had the quite the programming mindset for radio in the first place. So NOT sorry to see Cumulus has tanked. We will see how long the recovery process will take.

Jan had a good programming mindset, beginning when he very successfully programmed an FM CHR in Roanoke 40 years ago.

Where is mindset and skill set are today is open to debate, though.

The new CEO of the Big Fluffy Cloud Company sent out a survey to company rank-and-file. I wonder if there was sufficient complaint about Jan's 'leadership' tactics that would lead them to figure out what they probably already knew -- Jeffries had to go. If it wasn't his choice to leave, sorry, but I don't feel any sympathy for him. If it was his decision to leave, then fine. Good riddance.

Jan has definitely had programming success in his career: Baltimore, Chicago and other markets. He was certainly a survivor and had a very long career in a young person's business.

He developed a reputation along the way for not treating people in the nicest way and for being vengeful.

Didn't he work with you at WERC during the days of the "Big Switch?"

Yep.

I was looking for a guy to do afternoons on the AM, and called a friend, Bill Tanner, at WJDX to see if he knew of someone. I connected with Jan who was doing PM Drive in Mobile, and hired him for WERC (AM).

Cumulus has started making changes in Mobile AL. WABD has a new PD and 660 AM has broken off the long standing simulcast of WGOK. I've seen other changes in the trades this week. Hopefully they will be aggressive in turning around some of the underperforming stations and markets.

Thus far, Cumulus hasn't gotten their hands dirty with WABD, WBLX, and the other stations. However little effort in terms of producing this station has been minimal to say the least. Hopefully the new PD will bring some new energy and leave Adam Bomb to do his gig in Atlanta and only in Atlanta.
