Jane McGarry Gets Arrested For DWI

News is news, no matter if its good or bad, it needs to be reported...

I agree. But to have to cover such a story regarding a colleague has to be awkward both for the reporter and for the station.

Well, of course NBC 5 isn't going to cover it, I'd be really surprised if they did. It reflects poorly on the station and they'd rather keep it quiet, also, it's really not news, misdemeanor DWI isn't exactly TV news. It is, however, a news blurb. gossip. interesting, but not earth shattering.

My prediction:
Local TV affiliates don't mention it, let alone mention that other local stations exist! Maybe one of the independents mentions it in a gossip area during a morning show or something.
Radio morning shows might mention it, but not in the "hard" news.
Newspapers eat it up. This kind of thing is right up their alley.

On the other hand, isn't May a big ratings month for television? If so, given how fierce local news competition can be and given that such stations are not beneath turning their newscasts into electronic tabloids as a hook to draw in viewers, perhaps Channel 5's condition for forgiveness would be to require Jane to agree to allow them turn the whole thing into a circus.

They could throw the doors wide open on her private life in nightly installments - have her on camera tearfully describing any and all sordid details going back to childhood of what led up to her doing it, how it felt to be arrested, how it felt to face her family and colleagues and public, how it makes her realize that she is no better than any random unaccomplished lout who happens to be watching the newscast, how wretched and sorry she now feels and how the experience has turned her life around and has inspired her to launch a crusade to make the world a better place as a result of the whole thing happening. She gets to keep her job and Channel 5 gets really nice ratings for a week's worth of installments - all that for the price of her dignity.

Would anybody put it past them to at least think about doing such a thing?

She damn well better not get fired. I'm certainly not promoting drunken driving, but all to often people seem to forget one basic thing--in this country you are innocent until one of two things occurs: 1) You plead guilty or 2) You are found guilty in a court of law. More than 20 years ago I was pullled over one night and busted for DWI. I was not intoxicated, not by a long shot. After getting out of jail in the morning, I immediately called my boss at USA Radio Network and explained the situation to him. He spoke with management and they concluded (and correctly so) that I was innocent until proven guilty. I continued working as my attorney managed to drag things out. More than two years later I finally went to trial. The prosecution had nothing. Nothing. Bottom line, NOT GUILTY!!! My bosses knew that if they had fired me, then I was found not guilty, THEY could have been in trouble. In a nutshell, are most people who are busted for DWI actually drunk? Yes, probably so. But we can't assume anything until the facts are all in.

I like Jane McGarry, I don't think she should get fired.

It wasn't pot or coke after all, as that would be a morals issue....

Alcohol is NEVER a morals issue, in Texas !!!!!

Drinking (but not getting drunk) is promoted all the time on local TV.

However local radio talk hosts do promote getting drunk.

It is, the exact society we work, and live, and play in every day, and so it will go on like that until the end, of the world !

I watch channel 5 every morning, but WOW! What is going on over there? What happened to Jennifer Lopez? One morning she was doing the weather, next morning, she was no longer there. There's a new guy that started this morning. Seems like the only that has been there long term is Tammy Dombeck.

Jennifer Lopez I think left because of contract issues .Also, Mark Hayes reminds me of Dr. Julius Hibbert from The Simpsons w/ his laugh. A nice addition to NBC5 in the AM...

This is what happens when you mix drinking and driving, you don't think.

That blood draw isnt going to lie. Now, one question will be: is she going to get special treatment? Like getting it knocked down to PI or obstructing a highway?

And to say this isn't news is naive. She's been a TV anchor for decades...she is a public figure.

Can you be fired for getting arrested for DWI? In many instances, yes.

Ok. Let's say KXAS gives Jane the boot. Several months down the road she goes to trial and is found not guilty. What then? I realize many people have a morals clause in their contracts. But there's one helluva difference between being charged with a crime, and being convicted of a crime.

I predict a very interesting roller coaster ride w/ this case and how its handed both in a court of law and in the press..

Jane will be on Sherman TV before the year is out. (Channel 12 since the other channel locked up the market's 'popular old lady' a while back.)

Just stumbled across this when I went to check for a local weather report. Jane has resigned from Channel 5 effective today. http://www.nbcdfw.com/on-air/about-us/NBC-5-Statement-Regarding-Jane-McGarry-161975385.html On her facebook page she apologized and stated that she plead no contest to a Class B misdemeanor charge of driving while intoxicated. She stated her blood alcohol level was .11 and that she has paid a fine of $1,200, is on probation for 18 months and will do at least 40 hours of community service.

Ridiculous to lose your job for a single indiscretion such as this.
