JANE SHANNON OUT AT KIRO?

Whoever said FM is better for KIRO maybe doesn't realize that many commuters drive from outside the hiss free FM range to and from work and school. And, truck drivers going up and down the FM corridor. And the AM groundwave at 710kHz is the best of any signal in the area. The dir nightime pattern for KIRO is fantastic except for a slight insignificant null to protect 710 WOR NYC. The switch to FM will benefit talkers KING 1090, Siegel on 1300, 570, 770, and KOMO 1000, and the Portland talk stations south of Olympia. In Salt Lake, Bonneville has a simulcast of KSL on AM and FM. That's the best way to do it. On the other hand, 25 year olds aren't going to listen to stale AM morning news programs or Dave Ross/Dori Monson even if they're on FM. FM talk should be lifestyle talk to get the younger crowd - Dr. Drew et. al.

You can do FM N/T in Phoenix since once you're outside the Phoenix metro there is essentially nothing -- except cities of 5,000 or less, until you get to Prescott, Tucson, and Flagstaff. Not the case in Western WA w/ Olympia, Everett, Pt. Angeles, NAS/Whidbey, MT. Vernon, Bellingham.

Olympia the state capital on the fringe! Yikes! --

Long-haul truck drivers typically don't frequent local businesses or advertisers. Coverage within the market is the focus, not skywave.

Olympia does not have sufficient coverage, the state capitol. That area is growing, along with the corridor along hwy 12 to the coast. if they could get 850kHz and expand coverage to the coast and Olympic Peninsula where there are no protections that would help the South Sound.

I am not talking about the Skywave - rather, the daytime coverage that covers from Vancouver to Vancouver and east to Yakima. There is significant transportation in and out of the Arbitron survey area from residents who reside in the survey area.

Phoenix, in the middle of desert w/ very little irrigation, not so much of an issue for their FM N/T, since once you get North on I-17 there is no traffic by Black Canyon City, and east/west on I-10 not much traffic either. Towns around the Phoenix metro like Black Canyon City and Wickenburg are not heavily populated.
