Janet Lomax out, JJ IN!

Word out of Channel 10 is that Janet will be doing the 5 and 6. Jennifer Johnson the 11. Robin kicked to health reporter only.

I know my thoughts on this one - what are yours?

The reason for the change is obvious. Channel 10 is grooming Johnson to replace Lomax, something that has been in the works for a few years now every since 10 got rid of Wendy Wright and put Johnson in the weekend anchor chair. The only one that seems to be getting the shaft here is Robin DeWind. Better watch out Robin because Channel 10 has a history of replacing women who start showing their age. If you don’t believe me ask Maggie Brooks, Donna Dedee, Laura Saxby or Wendy Wright.

With the recent ratings book showing Channel 10 losing ground to Channel 8 at 11 p.m., I can’t say that this announcement comes as a surprise. A personnel shake-up had to take place at WHEC. Unfortunately for Robin DeWind this decision does not benefit her. It's a demotion and she knows it. Arnold Klinsky and 10’s consultants find themselves in a very awkward situation. Janet Lomax has been 10’s co-anchor for a number of years and removing her altogether would create all sorts of rumors and speculation that 10’s management wants to avoid. By keeping Janet on at both 5 and 6, she still can claim title to being co-anchor, while Jennifer Johnson’s appearance on the 11 p.m. news not only allows 10 to make adjustments to ward off any gains Channel 8 is making, but it also puts Johnson in a position for the eventual move to replace Ms. Lomax’s once she leaves. While there are those critical of Ms. Johnson's performance as an anchor, it's a smart business decision on the part of Channel 10.

Jennifer Johnson is one of the most talented and aesthetically pleasing anchors in Rochester, so it makes sense to put her at 11:00 PM to allow her to shine. In my opinion, she really had the potential to pull in a loyal following, and hopefully 10 will market her correctly.
Edited by NewsSleuth on 04/19/06 03:43 PM.

As the person who hired Robin DeWind back in the 1980s to work as a reporter at WNYR-WEZO radio, I was disappointed to read that Robin was being replaced as the co-anchor of Channel 10’s 5 p.m. news hour.

I was always impressed with Robin’s work ethic and was very proud of her accomplishments as a beat reporter, medical reporter, and anchor at both Channels 8 and 10.

It appears, unfortunately, that Robin came up with the short straw as Channel 10 is making some on-air changes. Yet if you see the glass half-full, then at least Robin still has a job at 10 as their medical reporter.

I don't think Jennifer can hold a candle to Robin. It doesn't seem like a smart move to promote Jennifer over Robin, who has no plans to move out of the area. I think Jennifer is destined for bigger things.

Anything can be marketed. The question here is whether or not Johnson wants to stay in Rochester, or move on to a larger market? My guess is that if New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, or even Philadelphia were to offer her a job, she would be out the door at Channel 10 faster than you can say "See Ya"!

Additionally, Lynette Adams will be moving back to morning newscast and Nikki Rudd will anchor weekends. Janet is moving off of the 11:00 newscast at her own request.
______________

Lomax must have a lot of clout with the front office if she can request and be granted being taken off the 11 p.m. news. That is more clout than Kevin Williams apparently has. For years Williams didn't have to work late nights so he could concentrate on his weather business. But a few years ago he was back on 11 p.m., much to his chagrin, from what I was told by insiders who work at 10.

she is aesthetically pleasing. but that voice...so high and squeaky. it's like fingernails on a chalkboard.

Weather business? What type of business is that?

Chalkboard

That may be the prime reason that she doesn't break out of Rochester. She really needs work in that area. As a start, it sounds like she doesn't understand working from the diaphragm.

Otherwise, she's just another average perky young blond news anchor. That will work for another 10-15 years, then become REALLY annoying. With improved vocal skills, she'll be waving goodbye to cold WNY winters. Without, maybe not.
