January 2017 Boston Radio Ratings.

I think these numbers for WKAF are the WAAF simulcast, no?
I don't think the R&B-977 has been on the air long enough to see any ratings results yet....
WKAF was N/A (no rating applied) during the period while it was still a WAAF simulcast, all ratings for the simulcast went under WAAF.
WKAF's first rating on its own is for Jan. 2017, for which it had its new adult R&B format for most of the month.
0.9 is NOT BAD AT ALL for the debut month of a new format that just came on the air, and is only beginning to build an audience. I'm sure we will be seeing it go up from there.
The January book began on 1/5 and ended on 2/1. So, since it appears the format changed on 1/5, then the entire book is with the new and separate format. As Eli P. says, 0.9 ain't bad for a first month on a limited signal.

Interesting that " Progressive" talk and PBS programming has higher ratings than Right-Wing WRKO.

Progressive talk and PBS are non commercial.WRKO has to find advertisers and so far keeps up with a long running format.
Is this the first time that WAAF and WXLO have been tied up in the ratings since the simulcast began? They both have similar signals in the city itself, but unlike WXLO, WAAF is the sole station with its format in the Boston market.
The problem with these numbers are they are the 6+ numbers and they are worthless for anything other than discussing because we have nothing else to do.
Unless you are comparing apples to apples, demographic vs demographic, format vs format, they don't have a lot of use.

Taking the Oct-Nov-Dec three book average in 25-54, we see WBUR with a 4.3 and WRKO with a 0.8.
When we look at 12+ numbers, WBUR goes down a couple of ticks, but WRKO nearly quadruples... because most of their audience is over 55.
They may be worthless to advertisers...but they DO show TOTAL listening and TOTAL cume...and I find that interesting.
That said, it's rare that a station is at the top of the 6+ ratings and at the bottom of the 25-54 demo.
So, you are right, don't make any hasty judgements on 6+ (i.e. "WKAF with quite the lackluster number.

IN the 6+ #'s it seems that anything beyond the top 12-14 are stations that are under performing.
There are quite a few examples. Start with the may commercial news/talk stations that may be Top 5 in 12+ that are not even Top 10 in 25-54.
And the poster child for this phenomenon was WDUV in Tampa... a decade and a half at #1 while being #15 or below in 25-54. Eventually, they freshened up the playlist and tempo and are now among the top 25-54 stations, but they went nearly 15 years "out of the money" demographically while winning the beauty contest.
I just find the ratings amusing because Krazy K000000nah promised his audience when he switched to the 12 noon slot 2 years ago he was "going national" once the "ratings [were] up".

Yes so far no takers for Kuhner though one station in NC supposedly was going to take a 15 min segment and replay it later.Kuhner did do some national radio filling in for Michael Savage, both before he started his RKO show and then more recently.

And....? WGBH 89.7 is building an audience without advertising. Perhaps, WRKO's lower rating status than a non-commercial radio station is an indication that the current WRKO format is at least stale and aging.
On radio, that's NPR. PBS is television.
Without advertising...but without the albatross of the AM band that no one under 60 seems to even know exists. Not to mention that WGBH radio has access to the resources of WGBH-TV.

740 doesn't PPM encode. Back in the last of the diary years, it often got around a 1 share 12+, and were in the top five in its target 60+ demo.
The AMs which are home to the radio market (MSA) are:
590, 650, 680, 700, 740, 800, 850, 890, 950, 960, 980, 1000, 1030, 1060. 1090. 1110. 1120. 1150, 1150, 1200. 1230, 1260. 1280, 1200, 1330. 1340, 1360, 1390, 1400, 1410, 1430, 1450, 1460, 1470, 1490, 1510, 1530, 1550, 1670, 1590, 1600. 39 commercial and two apparently non-com.
9 of the AMs show a 0.1 or more in Nielsen, on average.
