January 23: This Day in TV History

Just a few random TV related events that happened on January 23. Discuss or comment as you please……

1919: Actor/comedian Ernie Kovacs is born in Trenton, New Jersey.

1923: Actress Florence Halop (St. Elsewhere, Night Court) is born in Queens, New York.

1933: Experimental TV station W9XAL begins transmissions in Kansas City, Missouri on 2.75-2.85 mHz.

1939: Actress Arlene Golonka (The Andy Griffith Show, Mayberry R.F.D.) is born in Chicago.

1943: Actor Gil Gerard (Buck Rogers in the 25th Century) is born in Little Rock, Arkansas.

1950: Actor Richard Dean Anderson (MacGyver, Stargate SG-1) is born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His Gopher State roots were reflected in his two most famous roles, as both Angus MacGyver and Jack O’Neill were also referred to as hailing from Minnesota.

1955: KLRJ-TV (channel 2) begins broadcasting in Henderson, Nevada. Not long after, the station would change its calls to KORK-TV (now KVBC) and its city of license to Las Vegas. In 1967, it would move to channel 3 to avoid interference with newly signed-on KTVN in Reno.

1974: Actress Tiffany Thiessen (Saved by the Bell, Beverly Hills 90210) is born (as Tiffany-Amber Thiessen) in Long Beach, California. (For those who may be confused, she dropped the “Amber” from her professional name several years ago

1976: Donny & Marie premieres on ABC.

1977: The 8-part miniseries Roots debuts on ABC. The final episode is still ranked by Nielsen as the 3rd-highest rated TV program ever.

1983: The A-Team premieres on NBC.

1991: Demonstrators from an AIDS activist group break into the CBS News studio and begin chanting just as Dan Rather begins speaking during the beginning of the CBS Evening News. (One protester was even seen on camera briefly.) Rather immediately calls for a commercial break and later apologizes to viewers about the incident.

1994: CBS, which had broadcast NFL games since 1956, airs its final game (the NFC Championship Game), having lost its NFL rights to the fledgling Fox Network. CBS however, would regain NFL rights (taking over the AFC package from NBC) in 1998.

2003: Actress Nell Carter (Gimme a Break!) dies in Beverly Hills of heart disease complicated by diabetes, aged 54. She had previously survived two brain aneurysms.

2004: Actor Bob Keeshan (Howdy Doody, Captain Kangaroo) dies in Windsor, Vermont, aged 76.

2005: Johnny Carson dies in Los Angeles, aged 79.

(Just a little featurette I hope to do as time permits. It’s an entirely random selection based on a quick Net search, and is not meant to be comprehensive. So, don’t post nasty messages about “you forgot THIS” or “how could you not mention THAT?” Do so, and I’ll just take my keyboard and go home…..) ;)

...leading to a deliciously snarky gag about the show in the first reel of the 1980 Alan Arkin comedy Simon (which also forecast, in a manner, the Chicago "Max Headroom" WGN-TV/WTTW break-ins). Scary question: why do Donny and Marie Osmond still have media careers today?...

It's a joint conspiracy put together by the LDS, Nutrisystem, Hawaiian Punch, Freemasons, the Republican Party, Mike Curb, Clear Channel, Brigham Young University, Fox & Friends, Dick Clark, Ryan Seacrest, Arsenio Hall, and The Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

Exactly! Look for the Romney/Osmond ticket in 2012. Marie, not Donny - so the GOP can pull in those disappointed Palin supporters. Prediction: Utah Senator Bob Bennett (R) will retire when his term ends in 2010, and Marie will win the seat. Romney will be criticized for selecting Senator Osmond due to lack of experience, but the clever Romney team will point out that Marie has a much senatorial experience as President Obama did when he ran for President. As a consolation prize, Palin will be offered Secretary of State, but will fail to win confirmation because she refers to Hezbollah as the 8 day holiday celebrated by Jewish people.

While a sad moment then, I now laugh heartily since the NFC is so much more enjoyable on Fox. CBS just seems to ram the AFC down our throats and bypasses any major mentions of the NFC unless they get lucky and get a Dallas game or someone in the upper echelon of the NFC. Then they still seem to be slanted toward the AFC. The AFC has some really good teams but its smaller market sizes and fewer CBS O&O stations in those markets makes it the weakest NFL broadcast package. They bought football for the ratings and the revenue and not to have the most competitive conference. Fox has O&O's in 11 of the 16 NFC markets and CBS has only 7 O&O's in the 16 AFC cities. When you spend a few billion to get football, the local ad sales from the owned stations is hugely important. This year's conference championship ratings were down from last year as were the market sizes of the teams represented:
(4) Philadelphia
(12) Phoenix
(23) Pittsburgh
(26) Baltimore

Concerning Donnie and Marie, I was recently in Las Vegas where they have a show at the Flamingo Hotel. I am wondering why they have not released their show from the 70's on DVD, or why one of the classic TV networks has not tried to run the show. Who owns the rights?

I can't say who owns the rights to Donny and Marie, but it may be the same issues that keep a lot of Variety Shows from being released.. Rights to Music performances of the guest stars would have to be acquired..and supposedly Variety show reruns on Broadcast/Cable don't rate very high supposedly..or not high enough..

Some cases, the "rights issues" partly pertain to dual ownership from different production companies. In the case of Donny & Marie, the owners of the first episodes were Sid & Marty Krofft (from what I can recall). One infamous case in this regard is The Carol Burnett Show, the first five seasons (1967-72) of which were co-owned by veteran producer Bob Banner. This was why the earliest sketches on the syndicated Carol Burnett & Friends date back to the 1972-73 season.

1964: Actress Mariska Hargitay (Law and Order: Special Victims Unit) is born Mariska Magdolina Hargitay in Santa Monica, CA. She is the daughter of Jayne Mansfield, and was asleep in the back of her mother's car when Mansfield was killed in an automobile accident between New Orleans and Slidell, Louisiana, on June 29, 1967.

I don't believe "dadgum" was exactly the epithet used. This is Casey Kasem, not Bobby Bowden... ;D
