Just a few random TV related events that happened on January 7. Discuss or comment as you please……

1912: Cartoonist Charles Addams (The Addams Family) is born in Westfield, New Jersey.

1927: Philo Farnsworth submits an application for his first patent, covering a complete electronic television system, including an "image dissector tube."

1950: Actress Erin Gray (Silver Spoons, Buck Rogers in the 25th Century) is born in Honolulu, Hawaii.

1955: Alabama gains its first educational TV station as WTIQ (now WCIQ) signs on to channel 7 from a transmitter located atop Mt. Cheaha, the highest point in the state. It is just the 9th education station to begin operating in the U.S.

1956: KHAD-TV (channel 8, now KGNS) begins broadcasting in Laredo, Texas.

1956: Actor David Caruso (NYPD Blue, CSI: Miami) is born in Forest Hills, New York.

1957: TV host Katie Couric (Today, CBS Evening News) is born in Arlington, Virginia.

1961: The Avengers premieres in the U.K. on ITV.

1974: The short-lived NBC game show Jackpot! debuts. The show would later be revived twice: a 1985-88 edition taped in Canada and broadcast in the U.S. on the USA Network, and a single-season syndicated version in 1989-90.

1977: Actor/comedian Dustin Diamond (Saved by the Bell) is born in San Jose, California.

1980: In the Wheeling-Steubenville market, WTRF (channel 7, formerly NBC) swaps network affiliations with WTOV-TV (channel 9, formerly CBS).

1982: Fame, adapted from the 1980 film of the same name, premieres on NBC

1991: Talk Soup debuts on E!

1992: Puppeteer Richard Hunt (The Muppet Show, Sesame Street) dies of AIDS in Closter, New Jersey, aged 40. His Muppet characters included Scooter, Janice, Beaker, Statler, and Sweetums.

2004: The Apprentice debuts on NBC.

(Just a little featurette I hope to do as time permits. It’s an entirely random selection based on a quick Net search, and is not meant to be comprehensive. So, don’t post nasty messages about “you forgot THIS” or “how could you not mention THAT?” Do so, and I’ll just take my keyboard and go home…..) ;)

1920: Vincent Gardenia (All in the Family, L.A. Law) is born (as Vincenzo Scognamiglio) on this date in Naples, Italy.

1970: Doug E. Doug (Where I Live, Cosby) is born (as Douglas Bourne) on this date in Brooklyn, New York.

2002: Avery Schreiber (My Mother the Car, Chico and the Man, Match Game) died on this date from a heart attack in Los Angeles, California.

"Jackpot!" displaced "Jeopardy!" in the noon (ET) slot on NBC
and never came anywhere near the popularity of the "answer-
and-question" show. That and "Password"'s transition to an
all-celebrity format turned out to be a boon to CBS and "The
Young And The Restless".

ahhh....that brings back memories of puberty and the big Erin Gray/Lynda Carter/Catherine Bach/Farrah Fawcett
debate that was going on amongst all of us guys at school. ;D

I've said before that some of the actresses of my childhood,
such as Barbara Eden, Sally Field, and Marlo Thomas, still look
great even though they're in their 60s or even 70s. The actresses
you mentioned, with the exception of the late Farrah Fawcett, would
have to be 60 or thereabouts (Erin Gray turns 61 this year), and if they
still look as good as they did in the '70s and '80s, I can understand why
you guys still get enthusiastic about them.
