January PPM's

Strange book.

  • For January, WIP takes pole position by leaping from 7.3 to 9.8. Can’t imagine why.
  • WMGK more than recovers (7.0 – 6.7 – 7.8) any listeners who may have wanted a Gene Autry-flavored change of pace
  • WMMR, not quite so much (8.3 – 7.2 – 7.6)
  • Wouldn’t blame anyone at WDAS (8.1 – 8.0 – 6.6) for wondering WTF?
  • KYW is higher than I can recall in recent memory (3.9 – 4.3 – 5.5)
    • Because of the Eagles? Was the plane crash coverage during the January book?
  • B101 casually slides more than 10 shares (7.8 – 15.7 – 4.9)
    • Our AC station is in 6th place
  • WXTU recovers from the Christmas office party (4.6 – 3.6 – 4.8)
  • WOGL does the same (3.4 – 2.2 – 3.1)
    • Our Classic Hits station is tied with our NPR station for 9th place
  • As does BEN-FM (3.4 – 2.2 – 3.1)
  • WIP’s stream jumped from 1.7 to 2.9
    • Might wanna take a second with that. WIP’s stream rated higher than stations like Power 99, Q102, and all of Urban One’s stations.
  • Speaking of Power 99 and Q102, they appear to be taking longer to recover (3.0 – 2.6 – 2.5 and 2.7 – 2.0 – 2.1, respectively)
    • Our CHR station is in 18th place! Only 3 in-market commercial FM stations (WRNB, WTDY, and Rumba 106.1) rated lower.
  • And speaking of WTDY, they're taking a little break from the 2-shares (2.5 – 1.8 – 1.9). Everybody deserves a rest now and then.

Plane crash and aftermath was in last few days of book. Plus a few predicted snowstorms in January and lots of stuff happening in DC and as you mentioned Eagles all probably contributed to increase.

Does WDEL even subscribe to the Philadelphia book? Seems odd a Wilmington station would suddenly show up with a 0.1, but I guess Forever must subscribe their Wilmington cluster since WSTW is always there with a zero point something.

Same with WKMK out of Eatontown showing up for the first time.

Back when non-subscribers were still included in publicly available numbers, Philly stations go about an 80 share in the Wilmington book. Strange that Wilmington is considered a separate market. The Census Bureau considers it park of the Philly Metro. Maybe it should be an embedded market like Long Island or Middlesex-Somerset-Union.

I always appreciate their recaps and wish those detailed reports were available for all of the PPM markets

I really hope Audacy is patient with WTDY
WTDY is extremely over modulated on a consistent basis. I try listening to the acoustic sunrise on Sunday mornings but I usually have to turn it off due to the horrible audio. There’s either something wrong with the processing or someone has the pot set entirely too high.

I hope Q102 doesn't flip formats.
There's realistically only one station in the market that iHeart might consider flipping (in the long term), and it most certainly is not Q102. Besides, what format is out there that would work better for them than what they're doing already?

I''m an outsider looking in, but to me it seems 96.5 has been a mess for a long time. Probably going back to when they ended the "Wired 96.5" format. Audacy should just move the KYW simulcast to 96.5 and sell the 103.9 signal.
Or keep the revenue stream from both and continue on as they are.

Philly may be the only major market without a CHR in the top 10. Wonder what the market dynamics are here that are pushing down Q's ratings.

Looks like Phoenix is also CHR-less in its top 10. KALV checks in at No. 11 and KZZP at No. 14. The market's two ACs and two country stations are in the top 10, though. That's probably where a good portion of those 18-34 females that CHR used to feast on are probably tuned now, largely because much of the lower end of 18-34 isn't listening to much radio at all.

Audacy has a lot of strong rated Hot AC stations in other parts of the country. These ratings are probably a fluke. 96.5 ratings were stronger just a few months ago and it’s an improvement over the CHR format

I hope Q102 doesn't flip formats.
I go back to the days in which Q’s main competition was Eagle. In my mind Q squeezed them out with highly energetic imaging and on air personalities. They were always extremely tight and fast paced in their presentation with jocks like Motormouth Terry and very good dance mixes on weekends and even during certain day parts throughout the weekdays.

Since then I’ve aged out of their target demos and hardly listen these days but I put their afternoon drive show on a couple weeks ago and it was like listening to Stuttering John. I’m not trying to be malicious but I couldn’t believe how far the station has fallen with the long pauses and incessant banter from a very unpolished host between the records.

I don’t know if this is the reason the station is doing poorly in the ratings but I’m sure it doesn’t help.
