Q102 just sounds terrible these days. No energy. And it sounds worse lately because they have gone more Adult CHR, the playlist is extremely stale. They clearly moved in that direction to fend off WTDY, and now both have terrible ratings.

It's actually interesting how much Philly's market resembles Baltimore (or vice versa, given Baltimore is smaller). Strong urban, rock, and AAA stations with weak CHR.

Toward the end, Eagle was moving to grab a more-desirable adult demo while Q102 was left to pick up the teen listeners (hyped-up imaging/rhythmic lean/pitched-up music). IIRC, the effort was starting to work, but it was decided to flip to Smooth Jazz instead.

Your residents are too smart, too hip, and too diverse for Top 40. At this point, that format is for middle-aged white men who don't want to hate new things. Talk radio is for middle-aged white men who do.

Your lack of understanding stems from your use of the phrase "unpolished host between the records."

Huh? Top 40 (or CHR as it's been called for more than 40 years) appeals most to women 18-44, mainly under 30. Very few middle-aged white men are listening to it at all. They're getting new music from country, Hot AC or whatever variety of rock is available in their market, if any.

I was confused by that one as well. I wasn't sure whether we were supposed to be reading it with a sarcastic tone. While I certainly agree that today's "Talk" format is for white men who want to hate new things, CHR is most certainly not aimed at (nor largely being listened to by) middle-aged white men. Even if it were, I'm sure that plenty of them are champing at the bit to complain to whomever will listen about the fabricated "dangers" of Chappel Roan!

Actually, today's CHR or Top 40 is aimed principally at 18-49 women, and more specifically 25-44 women. It does not target men specifically.

While I do understand the point about the difference in the two Rumba incarnations, I do not see commenting on their low numbers to be bigotry.

Do I look like a full blooded white guy...Had to finally prove you wrong to get you off my back...

I'll give wibg a pass on the bigotry, What caught my eye on his post was the assertion that classic alternative was the current "hottest" format. Alternative of any variety hasn't been "hot" for at least two decades.

Yes. I'll start with "tastes have changed." I think you have an idea in your head that music jocks all need to adhere to some kind of decades-old dogma about what radio should sound like.
