January Ratings

Interesting finds, WRVR dropped to 5th place, with KQK coming in at 4th with a 5.5. The meters are continuing to take a toll on WDIA with a 2.8 12 plus. However WLOK has a 4.0 12 plus, Interesting.

Complete results are available on this website.

KQK is doing really well at 5.5. That station actually has jocks with talent. I don't know how highly KQK bills, though. That matters more than the ratings.

I like KQK. I don't care what anyone says.

But WOW! Check out 98.9! I occasionally flip to 94 and 98, respectively, for their variety, but that's a big drop. I, myself, only listen when I’m bored with the other stations. Which is frequently because this market sucks.

Any insiders from Citadel here (you can use a fake name, of course) say what the vibe is like over there?

However, The Max has the 8 ball in the corner pocket with no rounds left for Rock 103.

Also, are the numbers for Radio Now for real? Or is this new station info gathering?

Radio Now hasn't really bit much of a chunk off the Q as many expected. I guess when all the tanning salons on Germantown Pkwy can't pick you up inside that's the outcome.

Hot is consistent.

PPM has shown us no one listens to KQPN, WCRV, WLRM, KWAM, and WMQM.

WPLX is the number one station in Memphis.... NOT!

I have to assume KQK is doing well with the at work crowd based on the numbers.
I am sure someone can clarify this for me.... KQK is rated high due to the overall TSL being higher even though the cume is lower than some other stations..

Not pissing in KQK's cornflakes at all as I like the station, but PPM can give a lot of false info. If you go into a bar and KQK (or any other station) is playing, PPM credits whatever station it hears, even though you may be more interested in the conversation you're having with Barbie while trying to get her home and not listening to the station at all. Or if you're riding in someone else's car and they're playing their favorite station which you don't even have on your car radio preset button, they get credit for you listening. PPM is not the greatest audience measurement tool ever conceived. It's a very dumb device in terms of accuracy.

I see your point but I have a different view. If I was a business owner and I wanted to advertise on the radio, I would want the station with the most exposure. I wouldn't care one way or another how the listener got the message. If I was at the bar and Barbie got up to use the restroom, I might hear the advertisement and I might remember it. Same goes if you hear the commercial in someone else's car.

Though, I also see where it may affect stations that specialize in a target demo that your product only sells well with.

I still think the majority of the PPM numbers would still be the station of the meter's choice, generally. Though there are exceptions, it's still a much more effective way than relying on people to fill out the diaries.

I wonder what the real ratings of WPLX are. There was an old book that had the ratings of 1.2. Even if and that's a big IF the station has really taken off, there's no way the ratings could be higher than 1.5. That's admittedly a big stretch. I suspect 1.2 is more like it. The station may not have had a PPM system set up for this last book. With the hours of daytime power being expanded now moving into the spring, we'll see if WPLX picks up steam. Even if things broke right for WPLX, the best WPLX can hope for is to be a top 20 station. Number 1 is a pipedream. I believe WPLX has only had a minimal effect on WDIA's declining ratings.

Ah, but I would be inclined to order Barbie another drink while she's in potty, and wouldn't be able to hear the commercial because of the other jerk like me trying to talk his pickup into a quickie tryst. I might learn something listening to him and not be interested in hearing another car dealer spot.

And while I'm being silly, I do get your point as well.
