January ratings

Note no impact at all from "Evolution." Not a great signal, and music completely unfamiliar to 95+ percent of the potential audience, a sub-1.0 rating was predictable. How does Clear Channel build an audience for this station if people aren't hearing it anywhere but on the Web and in clubs, and specialized clubs at that? How does CC sell advertisers on a station that's slugging it out with WERS?

Same way WFNX did. Niche format, narrow focus, but loyal and active listeners who likely go out, buy electronics, travel, and are attuned to euro chic culture. Likely easier to sell "Evolution" than "the Harbor", which didn't really create any raving fans.

It'll be really interesting to see how Kiss 108 / Jam'n / AMP & Hot play out in the next few months. Looks like the new competition is chipping away at both Kiss & Jam'n, but AMP so far isn't doing as well as WODS did.

Amazing to see Greater Media in 1st, 3rd, and 4th place.

High up spike for both WBZ AM and WBUR.
Is this due to the blizzard ?

What is CCs goal for WEDX ?
I would think they would be happy with a 1.?.

WJMN needs to do more than a tweak now.

I've actually slowed down in my amount of posts so it may take me longer to get to 13,000 than you'd think.
CC paid $14 mil for 101.7--are they making their money back? Limited signal but hey they get a third FM in town. Again though these are not nec. the ratings for the target demo.

I see that unlike all of the dance/EDM maniacs have predicted, 101.7's ratings continue to slowly tick downward.

How's that 2 share coming along?

They came on during the holiday period. Take a breath. I wouldn't really start looking at their numbers until spring qtr.

Note also that many local universities were on break for some (or even all) of January.

Won't make a hill of beans difference. It's never going to hit a 2, or even come close.

I'll wager $5 on it.

It's a niche format, and 24/7 of a niche is sometimes too much. Remember the old polka shows that used to air on Sunday mornings on some stations? That was enough.

The same goes for EDM. It's a block of music that someone either likes or hates, it's not like a more mainstream format where the masses can tune by and go "wow, I like this song". You either get it, or you don't.

I'm not against the music. I just think a 24/7 format is overkill. Run EDM after 8pm and play more approachable fare during the day.

And from the EDM/dance crowd, we'll hear more excuses come spring when it's still at a .7-.9... "enrollment was down at the colleges, it snowed a lot, the signal is weak in (fill in the blank) etc."

As a musical genre it's more mainstream than you realize. As a 24/7 terrestrial radio format, it's only 2 months old.

Nice puff piece. All the "information" comes from people who are in the EDM racket, as well as from Scott Greenstein, whose fawning press releases hype EVERYTHING on Sirius XM to the nth degree. This music has been around as long as hip-hop and isn't even close to going mainstream, whereas hip-hop has been there, done that, and is now in the process of jumping the proverbial shark.

Only 77 more to go!!!!!

Regards.

Really insightful post.
Maybe instead of worrying about the post count of others you can continue to tell us how WEEI is just fine with no major changes looming.

The formats for WERS and Evolution are completely different. Not even remotely similar. Give Evolution time. It will never be a huge ratings success but will make money. The signal, by the way, is quite good for a class A. I can listen easily 35+ miles northwest of Boston.

So many naysayers and armchair PD's on here...

The format is great for the Class A signal and CC knows that.
I see billboards everywhere and they are out promoting at the clubs where their core audience is, at the latest hottest club dates. Even on WEEKDAY nights. That's getting OUT to your core audience. Billing and advertisement, people.

The rest of you can all sit in your armchairs and wish oldies would come back. It's not going to happen. 2013 is here.

Someone summoned me in here.

First, WNTI, I know, I know...you HATE dance music. I get that. But you're not going to resort by calling names on fans of this music! Get at me if it makes you feel better about yourself but you are NOT GOING TO BASH ANY DANCE MUSIC FAN IN HERE!!!

FIRST OFF, if you've READ my posts I have NEVER made any prediction about any number here. The one thing I have said was that if the Evolution numbers were respectable regardless of their signal that it could get to other markets. The one OTHER thing I did say was that a straight up EDM station may not necessarily work, at least in New York anyway. There is diversity in terms of dance music and I would think it's the same in Boston as well.

But back to this....seriously, I may not be into certain musical styles but I can respect the artists that produce the music and the fans that like them, no matter what genre.

Show that respect back. No need to call names out.

Thank you,
TONY SANTIAGO, New York Dance Music Coalition

P.S. We DO have a New England Chapter as well.
