January Thoughts and Observations on Austin Radio

There is not an overarching narrative to this post, it's just a grab bag of comments from recent listening:

- 104.9 The Horn sounds weaker on the north end of the market than it has in the past.

- 101.9 The Horn's translator in Round Rock also seems weaker and is basically unlistenable. Very poor signal with tons of distortion. I can't imagine many would put up with listening to it for very long. I sure can't. I've noticed it has been off the air completely a number of times recently too.

Very very surprisingly, even though KJZX-LP's move from 101.9 to 89.1 took place nearly two years ago. The 101.9 hasn't applied to move-in the translator. The four year obligation to rebroadcast 1260 KTAE on 101.9 expired over a year ago as well.

- 105.3 The Bat seems kind of lost in their cluster and it sounds stale. Maybe they have lost interest in the format. Pure speculation, but I wonder if a change might be coming this year.

- Relevant Radio's KIXL 970 filed a "cover" application last month for a new translator on 105.1 in between Hutto and Pflugerville. I have tried a few times but haven't heard it actually on the air yet.

- GAR seems very committed to KOKE-FM but 99.3 and 104.9 are very complimentary signals.

- 98.9 KUTX sounds so very good. It's not the loudest thing on the FM dial, but it has a lot of range and it is very clean and crisp. The music seems to be well encoded and the studio and mics sound great as well. Excellent job to their engineering department.

- 93.3 I don't understand Lucy. The imaging isn't bad, but the positioning doesn't seem clear and the music mix is sometimes baffling. Disclaimer: I am not in the demo. And the 6+ seems to have jumped in the last release but I remain skeptical long-term. I am curious how they are trending on w 25-54.

- 97.1 I love ACL radio, but I am worried about it sticking around long-term. It seems like it is firmly in third place in the AAA race, even though Sun and to a lesser extent KUTX aren't direct competitors.

- 1060 KFIT Does anyone know how long this station has been off the air? It's been off the last couple of times I have tuned to it. Off right now as I type this as well. Translator on 103.9 is still plugging away though.

Co-owned 1050 in Killeen recently filed an STA to be silent along with a silent authority for their translator because they said they lost their AM transmitter site. 1050 is off last I heard but the translator is still going.

No silent sta was filed for KFIT as far as I can see.

105.3 should go personality/talk and hire Dale Dudley, reunite him with Fonseca and Bearden and Chuy. Then bring back Jeff Ward. Austin needs a personality talk station that's local, not an echo chamber, and doesn't try to put every personality in the building on two or three shows with no stability. With the local ownership and the sales relationships those talents have, it could be a great fit for the cluster.
