Japan is planning on building a large broadcast tower...

<a target="_blank" href=http://www.physorg.com/news12124.html>http://www.physorg.com/news12124.html</a>

Plans are underway to build the world's tallest tower in Tokyo, about 600 meters (1,970 feet) high, in a derelict railway yard, press reports have said.

Japan's six broadcasting networks have selected a former freight shunting yard as the site for New Tokyo Tower which will become their radio and television transmitter tower by 2010, the reports said.

They did note one thing, however....

KTHI-TV Tower in North Dakota stands 629 meters high and there are a few other steel antennas in the world but they are all supported by cables.

Which means it looks like it's the tallest self-supporting tower.
