Jared Max Is Out

Good for him. I'll be interested to see what the reaction from his audience is.

You know what I find interesting? The fact that Jared held in his orientation during the decade or so that he's been with WCBS-AM (he said he was gay for 16 years), yet he makes his revelation immediately after joining ESPN.

We had a long time print guy turned radio host in Boston on WEEI a local sports station

"come out" recently, and it was a story for about 20 minutes, and life returned to normal.

For the most part everyone was supportive and it has not come up again.

Yeah really. I don't see how this is even news. What difference does it make if he announces that or if another host (hypothetically) says that he had a blonde, brunette and a redhead the night before.

@MRBI: Ah, yes, Steve Buckley, that's who you are referring to...

@WNTI: Personally, it makes no difference to me. I like a lot of Elton John's popular songs, even after he himself came out in public.

Indeed it shouldn't matter, but it does. Especially in the world of sports, where players and practically anyone associated with sports have faced a near absence of anything positive said about gay people, and on the negative side, anti-gay statements that still come out of the mouths of players even today.

It's an important disclosure nevertheless, regardless of what kind of strides have been made in the rest of our society. Important because so few players, employees of sports organizations or sports journalists have come out. Aside from the political importance of self-disclosure, I can understand why a sports media figure might be reluctant -- because of potential backlash -- but also because it might not seem like an appropriate moment to make such a statement unless something else happens in the world of sports that might make it the right time. For example, the disclosure of the sexual orientation of a team president and a player.

It just might be that the walls of prejudice are finally breaking down in sports.

It shouldn't matter. Who someone is sleeping with is no one's business. Who someone is sleeping with has now barring on how someone does their job.

I feel the exact same way. Gay people do not scare me, cause that is exactly what it boils down to.... who they sleep with which I can care less. However, there are hordes of ignorant small minded people out there and doing this might not be the best career move. It is perfectly okay for the man to be gay. But it is almost certain he lost some of his following by doing this.

Well said. Although I think you meant you COULDN'T care less otherwise you are saying you care which you clearly don't, right?.
