Jason Smith leaving ESPN Radio

Kind of surprising to hear about Jason Smith leaving ESPN Radio. During his show he posted on Twitter he would reveal during his last show Thursday night about his future plans. http://twitter.com/#!/howaboutafresca

I read elsewhere he's leaving to be a reporter for the MLB Network...will probably do some writing for them as well.

Quick fix: Bob Valvano, who does the weekends on ESPNR. Now that it's football season I think they reduce him to one night a week (Saturday in to Sunday, Friday night football programming repeats into Saturday morning last I knew)

naw. see 2002 or so. valvano flopped as a weekday host back then or so. too much b-ball/local time commitments too.

i still think the ryen russillo show (see sports by brooks) will fill some of the slot time along with a scaled back overnight show. espn will probably promote some new weekend fill-in to take the role as they did with jason smith last time. smith used to be with kiper on weekends.

i bet on adnan virk, mike salk or the poor guy that got shipped to charlotte (espnu) over the summer.

i'll also put chips on some kind of "grantland"/"podcast" repeat mess a la the fsr "soup". more platforms, less overhead, more ad revenue.

If they want Mel Kiper Jr.'s partner again, there's Dari Nowkhah. I think they'll go with somoene who is already on the west coast ...Mike Salk fits that bill.

well as you guys know Brian Kenny left ESPN for MLB network earlyer this month so the 8 - 10 slot is open. I have heard that Ryen Russillo would take over the 7pm to 10pm slot I assume they keep sportscenter from 10pm to 1am. Now the 1am to 4am slot I would suggest either John Kincade, Bobby V love his weekend show (LARRY HORSE), or Dari Nowkhah but I dont feel that would be a good idea considering that his show he has now is not even a year old since they took over for Erik whats his face forgot his last name

Erik Kuselias.

Would Ryen continue to be Scott Van Pelt's sidekick? John Kincade does a local show in Atlanta during the middays, so I doubt he'd do an overnight show. I do like Mike Salk. Maybe he'd get the overnight slot.

It's too bad, he's done a solid job on the night show and I was shocked to hear him say he's leaving.

Btw, he debunked the rumor of the MLB gig and said he'd announce the real destination tonight.

if u didnt list to Jasons show tonight it was a great show, he talked about his carrer with ESPN, everything hes done, his fans, and the passing of his mom. He did a great job and he will surely be missed on the radio.

Glad to hear it. He blows as a Sports Talk Host. To effeminate. Amy has more testosterone than Jason Smith. Now we focus on getting rid of JT the Brick and clean-up the overnight airwaves for good.

Leebo, You support guys who get fired or implode on their own. Brick and Looney are the gold standard of evening syndication. JT for close to 15 years. Go back to trying to get some of your unemployed buddies a job. Maybe there is a weekend update anchor or intern job available for you? Whoever you support eventually becomes unemployed. You are the kiss of death! Ben Maller for PRESIDENT!

please let it NOT be jeff rickard. he's like a wal mart or old navy clothes designer being asked to design for barney's or marc jacobs. solid but soooo boring. hasn't had an interesting or controversial segment ever. be it snr, denver or espnrado. the network needs someone with an edge or someone whos is willing to take chances. (that actually made me laugh as if that would ever happen). sominex rickard to the rescue.

unfortunately, i think its probably rickard... BBC World Service gets more internet traffic again...

I am afraid you are maybe right. Rickard nice guy but zzzzz... in that slot.

Rickard is more of a fill in host then a full time kind of guy. Plus if he did get a show I highly doubt it would be a night slot considering that in the night you want Energy.

Doesn't Rickard also have a Sirius/XM gig too? It's been Bobby V all week, maybe they're just going to go week to week until something sticks

which sucks because at some point it's going to be Amy Lawrence's turn
