Java Joel's English lesson

Java Joel, WAKS' evening host, did a funny bit Monday night. A guy called up and mumbled a request. Java mumbled back, then asked him about his mumbling. The only thing you could understand was that the caller was requesting Soljah Boy. At first the guy on the phone was taken a-back by the DJ mumbling back at him. Later, I think he got the joke (at least I hope so). Then a young guy called up using language that Java called thug-like, and asked him why he was speaking that way... was it to come across as "cool". The guy obviously used a few explitives that were beeped out, but in the background you heard some people laughing. They did move into potentially controversial territory when the subject turned to white people who try to sound black in order to be "cool". However, it was handled in a way that everybody listening would know it was all in fun.

Funny but not original. It has been done on other markets before.Although in Cleveland the bit can have a long life.

Good for Java with entertaining callers without being controversial. I remember hearing him interact on-air with a caller who wanted to hear talk about Farrah Fawcett and even hear songs from her. The caller was not too happy with the Michael Jackson tribute they were putting on the night he died, which ironically, was the same day Farrah died. Back to the call, Java said she didn't have any songs, and all I can remember was when the caller was still upset and wouldn't listen at all. I think then he hung up, but Java didn't miss a beat.

It's really cool to see the Kasper/Java Joel lineup on WAKS stabilize after going through a slew of afternoon and evening hosts. (i.e. Dan Mason, Jet Black, Stick on the Radio, J-Niice, Kasper during his first stint, and the never arrived Mack at Night among others) The station overall seems to be doing really well under Bo Matthews, even after Dan Mason left for his ill-fated stint at Y100 in Miami. KISS seems to be a fun station, and I hope their local line-up from 3p to 12a continues for a while.

There's a lot of energy in Java and his show. I actually stopped listening regularly when they dropped the Top 7 at 7 countdown. In fact, it's probably been over a year since I heard him last. I just put his show on 'for the heck of it', and hit upon this. Will I listen more? Probably. But, if they really want me back consistently, then they've got to rejuvenate countdown show and consistenly mention title and artist. At 7pm I'm on Z107.9 and their countdown, even though they struggle with title and artist too sometimes.
