Jax Alternative Massacre

Perhaps a little dramatic for a subject but apparently our good friends over at Cox Radio figured out what the alternative music folks wanted. WXXJ is beating WPLA more than 2 to 1. What a change from those 6 and 7 shares. Imagine if L&T weren't on Planet, they must be scraping the bottom after AM drive. Recently there were some roofers and other construction guys in my neighborhood and WXXJ was heard blasting. Since I know nothing about the format all I will say is congrats to Cox Radio for apparently doing it right and understanding the audience needs.

I wonder what if anything CC can do at this point. It seems everyone in town has been aiming at CC in one way or another. CC appears pretty vulnerable on lots of fronts. Who'd "a thunk it."

I would agree, since KISS-FM lost what local flavor it had left... their ratings aren't what they were a couple of years ago. Things between FKS and APE used to be MUCH closer.

All Jax needs now, is a powerhouse country station to give WQIK a run for it's money. Gator is doing a decent job, but I think this may be a job for Cox as well. (They do country very well)

Another question, does Bubba move to X to compete against L&T or do they continue the "we rock while they talk" approach?

I'm using my opinions from a weak 120 mile signal I get from WXXJ here in SC and my listening to years from Planet Radio. So take them with a grain of salt and a shot of tequilla...

Planet Radio has changed very little musically since 1998-99 or so. I think 102.9's goal is to destroy the long-time modern rock juggernaut that Planet Radio has become since they've had no competition...ever, really. Not to say I couldn't see 107.3 go "Everything that Rocks" a-la the Bone in Tampa, but unless they change musically...102.9 has the modern rock done right in Jax.

And I don't see BTLS going to WXXJ. The morning-show free thing might work well for them, plus he has done HORRIBLY bad in morning ratings in Richmond, VA.

If CC decided to blow up Planet Radio, here is a suggestion for 107.3:

They can move KISS-FM from 97.9 to 107.3, which has a better signal that is comparable to its rival WAPE, then either turn 97.9 into a black gospel station (just like what CC had before they sold and moved 92.7) or turn it into a simulcast of sports talk station WFXJ (930 AM). I know this probably won't happen but it is only a suggestion.

I was hoping someone would have jumped on this especially given how often I'm misunderstood by certain members of the Renda talent family. So I will attempt to choose my words as carefully as I can to make my points. To preface, this is not directed at the Renda talent pool.

Jacksonville is not unique in that a model is followed where the strategy is to tear down competing heritage radio stations. I just don't understand the comment about giving WQIK a run for its money. They are down several shares from where they once were so obviously they are loosing listeners and are taking hits in revenue as a result. While I understand the nature of competition, I just cannot accept how this is being done. Perhaps many of you will consider me naive but let me at least try to explain why I feel the way I do.

This thread was started to offer congratulations to Cox Radio for doing, what I consider a real bang up job in launching an Alternative “alternative.” Reasonable time has passed and the ratings, the ultimate report card, show the right decisions have been made and they apparently have filled some kind of void. And, Cox Radio didn’t require two stations to be directed against Planet to gain dominance. Now, Planet Radio needs to work harder to stay viable. Often, good competition can make everyone better. If not, it’s survival of the fittest.

I always thought Gator was performing well against the long-established market leader. Apparently, that wasn’t good enough, even with the old Rooster acting as some kind of protection. If Gator had decided to be innovative in their programming and mixed currents with legends/favorites similar to how WEJZ has long worked and they overtook WQIK, I would be the first to congratulate them. But they didn’t succeed in the way they apparently wanted, so they did what they did. Why do I get the feeling all this was done to satisfy a performance appraisal and not really the interest of the average listener?

Where I grow tired is in the hypocrisy one finds on these boards. So many opine about talent who looses their jobs for one reason or another but yet they support peeling listeners without thinking of their peers. Should Robbie, Boomer or Toni find themselves displaced due to budget cuts because of dropping revenue and ratings, I really do believe Jacksonville as a radio community will loose something very special. Would we really be better off loosing another, long-established program where listener impressions take yet another hit?

I guess it comes down to how success is measured. Many, I’m sure at the Renda family are happy with their results. Again, many of you may think I’m naïve but there are a lot of other ways to earn success. For those reasons, I just can’t congratulate this bunch on the country front.

WQIK is as heritage as you can get around here and I hope they fight as they have never fought before. I wish them well and I'm routing for them! Peace.

John, Renda only focus has been to bring down WQIK. First with Gator going after younger demos and 25-54. Then another attack with legends pealing off WQIK's older demos. They care about ratings and money, period.

Boomer and Robbie has been around a long time, but things change. WQIK's ratings have been declining for some time and CC is on the verge of going bankrupt..

That could be said of many stations and radio companies. I find your comment about CC going bankrupt interesting to say the least. CC just completed a private buy down valued in the millions, taking private securities that were previously public. Would you please expound upon your "bankruptcy" comment regarding CC? I'm very interested in learning about how you came to that conclusion? I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you. I'm only interested in learning the source you used to come to that conclusion. You may contact me "off-list" via e-mail at [email protected] if that works better for you.
