Jax "Awesome Mix" Labor Day Countdown

The end of summer is approaching. Over the last couple years, I’ve presented music “specialty” programming in conjunction with the long Labor Day weekend. These things are fun to do. I also think a break from reality is needed. We might as well carry on with some kind of tradition making this a yearly event.

I’ve decided to do this a little earlier than normal because a good number of radio stations across the country have already announced this weekend’s programming so I thought Jacksonville/North Florida shouldn’t be left out.

This is all about The Greatest Hits format. It is going through a rather significant evolution right now. I prepared most of this in the spring but over the last couple weeks, I needed to make a number of changes to reflect a more accurate image of the format currently.

Last year, I did a Top 1000 countdown. Honestly, it was way too long and if this was all real, the average listener would grow very weary of it very quickly. This time it’s 400 songs shorter. I agree with radio pros in that if too many borderline or even obscure songs are presented, it’s a risk not worth taking.

I’ve been learning quite a lot and I got great feedback the last time. Programming has long been a fascination of mine. I can sit for hours looking at song lists. It may make me weird but I believe it also gives me credibility when I talk of what works and what does not. I utilized an all-female panel this time to gain impressions at a local level. MediaBase proved very useful. I’ll explain a little more on that later.

The “Awesome Mix” of course comes from the movie “Guardians of The Galaxy.” I was so very much swept off my feet by that movie. What thrilled me the most was seeing lots of young people and kids being exposed to a good deal of 70’s pop music. Besides programming, I’ve always had a thing for creative radio station promotions.

If the format existed in Jacksonville, I’m sure I would have recommended a promotional tie to the movie. Perhaps as simple as when you hear XXX from the movie, be Caller X etc. for either movie passes or soundtrack CDs or both. BTW, songs from the movie have an * after the title. There’s some great ones featured. Anyway, I see the fun side of radio.

If anyone was looking for lots of 60’s music making the list, you will probably be disappointed. I tried to make this be as real to radio as possible. As is, this could easily be featured on a commercial radio station in Jacksonville and listeners would be very impressed with the variety. Overall, it's not tired and dated. The nature of nostalgia is burned out songs but the trick is to mix in some wow ones along the way. I believe I have done that.

The format is taking on some more rock elements to it. One hit wonders are vanishing. I’ve included a handful of 90’s titles. 90’s is meeting a lot of resistance but probably from the 55+ crowd. There is less R&B and disco this time around. There’s an Adult R&B station in the market and the trend is for less of that in the format.

600 songs is not the norm but there were too many great songs left out for a Top 500. That’s probably another tagline. I tried to keep a typical 45 year old in mind here. I’ve been high on the 70’s @7 feature but I believe that has finally run its course. 80’s @ 8 has never been hotter. That's a keeper!

Anyway, due to character limitations and to heighten the suspense (LOL) I’ll present the songs today and over the next several days. In each segment, I may add a comment or two about certain songs. Enjoy!

The bottom 100...There's a lot of Beatles songs that could have been featured but I didn't want to run the risk of making this a Beatles feature. There's lots of music and I wanted to keep a certain "sound" consistency....

Well, into the Top 500 now. In this 100 song segment, there’s a couple of lost hits worth mentioning. In the research group, we talked about where we grew up etc. Not too surprising, there was Georgia representation. Someone mentioned a favorite 70’s song called “Moonlight Feels Right” by Starbuck. The band originated from Atlanta. I love the song and actually forgot about it. The panel went wild over it.

As you go through the list, it’s rather generic in many respects but that’s how a lot of radio is today with regional/national programing etc. I’ve been trying to incorporate a local sound. One way would be the inclusion of more Southern Rock-ish tracks but then you wind up sounding like everyone else. So, “Moonlight Feels Right” found a place and so did “Do You Wanna Make Love” by Peter McCann. Interesting that song aired today on WCBS-FM as part of their “Turntable Tuesday” feature. I’m thinking I’m on the right track.
The format is shifting from hybrid oldies to what I believe is hybrid Adult Hits. I’ve attempted a balance without sounding like a train wreck. Trust me, it’s not easy. This is it for today…100 more songs now...more on the way tomorrow!

In the next portion of the countdown, I’d like to say a few things about “New Attitude” by Patti LaBelle. This is a song that would probably not be in normal rotation but air in specialty programing and/or especially in an 80’s @8 feature. The song is total energy and upbeat – what listeners mainly favor.

From what I know, the song has become popular among those who exercise. Women can relate to that song and I’ve heard it on a number of AC stations over the years. That's fine by me! Despite the song not being a major hit, it’s not unfamiliar so these are all pluses. Here’s another perfect example where a presenter can be today-relevant talking to working out to the song or how we all need a fresh start instead of talking about the song in terms of the past.

At the other end of the spectrum is the classic “When a Man Loves a Woman” by Percy Sledge. Generally, this song is not in heavy rotation and in fact is heard on rarer occasions. It’s still an important song because it does help differentiate Greatest Hits from everything else. With smart rotation too it’s not about how old a song is but rather how great it is. It's a huge reason I love the format.

Here’s another 100 for your listening pleasure. A number of 90’s titles are in this block. There’s been lots of discussion about that. My feeling is it isn’t any different from when the format introduced the 80’s and before that got deeper into the late 70’s. Updating a format is a must – pure and simple.

What’s true is those who do the format especially well don’t forget the roots of rock ‘n roll including the Motown greats. There’s a time and there’s a place to air those songs. One leading station I almost always talk about recently did an all request weekend. Lots of 60’s songs were requested and aired. The occasions may be rarer nowadays but it’s great the almost forgotten songs do have the chance to shine.

One more song block for today. We’ll save The Top 100 for tomorrow as the excitement (LOL) builds. "Changes" by David Bowie is the first song up. Not that it matters, but it’s my favorite Bowie song. It’s also what a lot of the format is going through right now – change. Things have a way of settling down for a while but change is constant, isn't it?

It’s time for the Top 100. As I’ve mentioned a number of times, the Greatest Hits format is going through some incredible changes right now. There’s also increasing overlap in 80’s titles with Adult Hits. “Relax” by Frankie Goes to Hollywood and songs similar to that are finding their way on the playlist. I almost fell off my chair when I heard that and even A Flock of Seagulls on Miami’s Greatest Hits station. This is a completely different direction for them but then the times are changing fast. Those songs did not make my list. Maybe next time. Who knows, maybe the direction will take a completely differently turn too. Radio is interesting that way.

Some additional thoughts. I read “Guardians of the Galaxy” remained #1 at the box office over Labor Day. Isn’t that incredible? I’ve always thought it important to tie what is contemporary to a nostalgia based format such as Greatest Hits. Relevance. That’s what my strategy was for this year’s countdown.

The format has made significant changes to be viable in 35-54. I’ve kept that in mind with this list. Specialty programming does not represent typical everyday fare, especially with the frequency of 60’s and early 70’s hits. However, when radio listening is generally down, it can be a perfect vehicle to spice things up.

I’ve witnessed certain songs gain favor with listeners as a result of countdowns and the like move to regular programming. (“Come and Get Your Love” by Redbone has a renewed popularity) BTW, I see a scenario where 60’s and/or early 70’s are rotated approximately every 1 hour 45 minutes. Some can be featured in a weekly specialty like a “Turntable Tuesday” mentioned earlier or anything unique.

In this particular specialty, I selected the songs that mirrored what I believe CC’s Magic 107.3 would have or should have sounded like today. There are some oldies elements but there is now an increased edginess and has some characteristics of Adult Hits with a lot more 80’s to include a few 90’s hits as well. Don't forget too, Saturday nights are proving an excellent opportunity to introduce more upbeat, party type songs that are becoming increasingly more a part of the format.

Recently, I had an occasion to review CC’s Premium Choice programming for Greatest Hits/Classic Hits. Since I’ve been using a movie theme, the programming reminded me of Stephen King’s “The Langoliers.” There was a time rip involving passengers on a plane. Basically, their surroundings were lifeless. It looked like an airport terminal but there were no aromas, sounds etc. It’s because the present time wasn’t born yet. Here’s the point.

The songs all fit into the format. There’s variety for THAT format but it’s all very sterile. If music can equate to aromas, it’s like you just don’t smell anything really inviting that draws you in. It’s all very OK and typical like the airport terminal but it just lacks that certain something.

I understand why national programming is done and why a CC utilizes Premium Choice. Cost-savings seems to override everything else. Also, the titles don’t go beyond format specific. You won’t find AC, Adults Hits, Rock or even R&B/Soul leans. No doubt, PC could be the programming in a number of formats in a specific market and they can't trample on each other. Based on market, a one size fits all approach doesn’t always result in maximizing impacts. I see vulnerability in that the local market cannot respond to competitive, local challenges well in national programming. This format works best when it reflects the market served.

Still, ironically, things here have gotten to such a level in Jax that even CC’s Premium Choice for a 70’s/80’s based format offers a good number of songs no one features. It has a place. Doesn’t CC have 2 translators not in use? Good Time Oldies on 102.3 is a non-factor. That’s probably another discussion for another day.

I’m not sure what next Labor Day will bring but I will probably refrain from a countdown. It’s an unbelievable amount of work. Lots of time is spent on research to get it just right. Even then, I would have tweaked further if I had more time.

The format may sound even more different next year. Then there’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” sequel and Awesome Mix Volume 2. Who knows what that will bring? But for the kind of radio I envision, the possibilities should always be exciting like a really good movie. They will come.

Hello John. I love this topic. This list really reminds me of the music mix I run on a pt 15 I run here in altamonte Springs FL. You have given me some songs I want to add to it as well so thanks for that. It's like a jack FM but way more deep and without that jack guy. ahhahahha

Thanks, Austin! It was great “chatting” with you on Twitter. Best of luck with your music efforts too. I’ve been blown away with the amount of offline feedback and response to this string. It’s amazing how powerful social media has become as I promoted this subject there. With the approach of 3,000 views, it’s clear this has gone beyond just North Florida. I’ve done this sort of thing a number of times in the past but this has generated the most interest from both avid listeners and those in radio. The comments and critiques I’ve received have been invaluable.

I endeavored to make this list as true to life as possible mirroring what a variety-based classic hits station would have sounded like last year. The format has seen considerable change over the past year. Similar to taking a brand new car off the lot, this list has already experienced some “depreciation” in that there’s easily 50 titles that could be replaced with something else to keep its’ value going and being true to what is actually happening.

It really is all about the music. Greatest Hits formats are targeting those who grew up in the 80s. There is nothing new about advancing the music as this happens with every format and especially nostalgia-based ones. What I find interesting is seeing how the Greatest Hits format is picking the songs to help differentiate it from everything else. I’ve been noticing some trends as well. The format is leaning a little more rock and it’s getting “whiter” as well in everyday programming. Weekends and special presentations such as this give the opportunity to dust off songs not normally heard.

One could look at AC too and realize they have gotten edgier as well. With certain ACs featuring artists such as Bon Jovi and even Joan Jett (imagine that!) and a good number of other titles that overlap with both Greatest Hits and even Adult Hits (Jack) formats, picking the right music and setting that clock correctly is an absolute must.

At any rate, there were some songs that could have or should have made the list. But then, everyone says that when these music specialty programs air. I had lots of questions about ranking. It’s important not to get hung up over that because the hits have to be contained throughout to prevent tune out. The #1 song actually earned more 10s than anything else. I was surprised with that one too! No matter where you are in this survey, listen to 10 songs in a row and variety reins constant with not only the tried and true but with some wow moments too.

I really enjoy researching the music. It’s just so interesting seeing not only the evolution of the format but the genius and skill sets of those individuals and companies who don’t throw in the towel but put forth incredible time, effort and capital too to keep that fun to listen to station going for the listeners.

Because I had so many requests as to what songs were left on the cutting board, I thought I’d share that here with 25 songs that didn’t get on the initial list but are very play-worthy and actually are currently on a number of Greatest Hits stations. Thanks for “listening” to this awesome mix and commentary! It’s not how old a song is but rather how great it is. Peace
