Jax: Cox radio for sale?

We all know Cox is selling their TV to Apollo Management....but word from the Atlanta Business journal is that Cox is now interested in divesting itself of radio.

So who would be the most likely buyer(s) of the Cox cluster here in Jax?

Upstate, I didn't know anything about Cox's intentions for both radio and TV so your post is appreciated!

To answer your question, I'd think there could be buyers. I'm not sure if an Entercom would be interested in the Jax market but perhaps smaller companies would be. But who really knows. Flagler Broadcasting has proven to be an aggressive company. They superserve Flagler and St. John's counties and they have recently added Country 106.3 in St. Augustine. They've got news/talk, two adult hits, a really 'cool' classic hits station and now 2 country stations. That's quite an achievement for a so called small company. If there is any station I think they might consider would be 106.5 WXXJ. Given its coverage of the southern half of Duval, it could prove a logical expansion move. If memory serves me correct, their GM, David Ayres had a role in that station many years and formats ago. Jax radio needs quality broadcasters for sure. My two-cents there.

With Planet moving to full-market signal at 107.3, I have to wonder if this had anything to do with Cox Media wanting to divest itself of radio. My first reaction to Planet 107.3 was iHeart finally grew a pair. But, Just maybe they figure Cox wouldn't challenge or flip any of their stations but just hold the course to remain as profitable as possible to attract new owner(s). For the record, I never understood how iHeart gave up on the extraordinary Planet brand. Despite all the listeners who wanted Planet back and then ultimately for it to find a better signal, it may very well be Cox's 'situation' that finally got them to make the move.

Flagler would be an incredible replacement for Cox's bland, predictable style. But I doubt they have the cash. The question is: would Cox sell off individual stations? Logic tells me no, but you never know. I agree, 106.5 would be a prime candidate & a logical replacement for Beach 105.5 (or have Beach 105.5/106.5)

As for Planet, they gave up the ghost years ago when then Classic Rock (WFYV Rock 105) flipped active (Rock 104.5) to take on Planet. This was a flanking move to ensure the success of then fledgling Alternative X 102.9. Planet had become complacent & Rock ate its lunch, forcing the flip. But the plan all along was kill off Rock 104.5 and keep Eagle and X as the only "rock" outlets in Jax. Thank God that nightmare is over.

A logical suitor for Cox radio might be Entercom. They already have a presence in Miami and to gain stations in the other major markets in FL (Jax, Orlando, Tampa) would be quite the coup for them. Another suitor may be Cumulus (God I hope not) if only for Cox's Atlanta stations.
