Jax Dec PPM

In social media, listeners at both WJGH and WEJZ did lots of bitching about going all Christmas in early November. They said they would bolt and they did. Perhaps there are some lessons learned here.

If Station A decides to flip to Christmas before the Halloween pumpkins spoil, doesn't it make sense for Station B to stay the course and flip as planned? Two adult hits stations going at it so early was in a word ridiculous. The other lesson learned is Jax continues to be a market that doesn’t act like everyone else. Christmas formats are a ratings bonanza elsewhere. With very warm weather to boot in Nov and early Dec, listeners just couldn't get into let it snow. The holiday book remains so who knows?.

Maybe I’m not too smart in the ways of combative radio. Maybe the plan all along was to set a trap for the competition to piss off their listeners so they could be brought down a few notches. If that's the case, it worked. But if it means shooting yourself in the foot in the process, I’m not so sure of the logic. Yes, I realize Magic was in the process of tweaking but surely they had to count on losing listeners flipping to Christmas so early.

If anyone out there can make heads or tales of all of this, please explain. Magic’s other competitor – Eagle- has been slowly but surely losing audience this year. Honestly, I envisioned the two stations being fairly close to each other ratings-wise. Now, Eagle is #2 after being out of the Top 5. Again, unless there is some dramatic shift in the holiday book, I just have to scratch my head and hope everything goes back to normal, whatever that is..

While the Christmas music thing was very kind to Lite in NYC and KOST in LA, I agree, there was way too much Christmas music, way too early, this year in Jacksonville! Magic 107-3 took a risk, and WEJZ may have reacted too quickly. JohnJax, I don't know if there's ever really been a "normal" in radio, in a sense, but I would think this PPM month is a bit unusual, and there's probably a few local managers hoping the same thing! Seems like Cox was the big winner this time around. Welcome to 2012!
