Jax Radio Perspective (FM only)

I have been listening a while to the radio and I have heard some things that get me when I hear them. Their are some suggestions I like to throw out there for the stations to pick up on. It could be the best thing to do. This of course comes from the average listner.

92.1-Keep that station going. It may not be a big listner draw, but brings a cash cow for the Perichs and others at WJXR Inc.

92.5-Good point to have an FM Spanish station and since I looked at the signal and gets into most of the Jacksonville city limits they will do all right. They do have an audience at least.

92.7-Keep on going even it is a Class A FM station the ratings are their and should not be turned off.

93.3-With no competition in the market Planet can just do what ever they want. If I were Cox I take 102.9 and give it a flip to alternative. Now that would send CC on a flip.

94.1-Since the station and the signal is moving into Jacksonville I can not say much about the station. I would suppose a name change but since Norsan bought the AM just last week, I only suppose that a change in call sign would be in order and that Renda can claim the WSOS calls for it self. A format flip could be in order as well for 94.1. We will just have to see.

95.1-Holds well as the leading Top 40 station in the market. It is one of the two Cox stations that have a full staff.

96.1-It will hold its own with teh Lite AC format. Heck no competion is good for them at Renda, but warning this cssh cow may head for the GATOR.

96.9-Holds its own with the new format. Seems to retain some of the oldies flare from back in the Cool days. It can do better if it had a night time jock and at least one weekend jock.

97.9-Draws some listners away from the APE. It does hold its own. It is not going to go away anytime soon.

99.1-It may be losing some listners to its new neighbor down a few notchs on the dial at GATOR (99.9). The morning show is so dry now. It seems more talk and less music, but some people like it and they do not care because they are the top rated station. Here is a warning for QIK: Watch GATOR they may bite before you know it.

99.9-A very well formated "hit country" station with the mix of new and old. With more music, more feautres and more contest who would not want to listen. Besides we know a nighttime jock is coming but when?

100.7-It has its ups and downs and I do agree it needs a jock for midday. Also needs to extend the The Kool Ride by and hour or Briggs can do 9-11 and AJ Davis could do 11-3. It would be like its one in Oklahoma KOMA. Even it is gone to the Greatest Hits of The 60's and 70's and no longer dubbs itself as an oldies station. It does need a power upgrade but the power it has now works.

101.5-Keep it going. The station works and does not need to be shut off.

102.9-Go Alternative. Your sister station The Eagle has killed you all off. Alternative would give CC heck and would love to have another station to battle against. Heck the ratings would shoot through the roof if they went alternative.

104.5-Do not change the station. It has long been a Jacksonville staple and it needs to stay that way.

105.3/105.5-Smooth Jazz indeeded and seems to work. Just leave the station alone because it works.

105.7-Does not fare well with V or The Beat. It needs to really promote itself to draw more listners.

106.5-This station has good line up and a great format. Salem would go nuts if it had to flip. Even Jax would to.

107.3-The bird is dead. GATOR is going to kill this station off sooner or later. Since their is an FM Spanish going in Jax it could be time for CC to bring an FM talker back to Jax. Heck Real Radio does well in Orlandon, why not Jax. Heck it would give Cox some competition.

Lets see what happens.

A very....interesting perspective, Mburg. Almost a fillibuster, but interesting to say the least!

Glad to see you're back again.

MB, my man, I can't even remember the last time I went up and down the dial and thought about all we have out there. My thoughts...

--Something will happen to The Point within 12-18 months. There's only so much you can do to spice up this format. It reminds me of the club the Simpsons visit where they celebrate New Year's every hour. An employee walks up to them and says, "Please kill me."

--I have always been a fan of the "alternative but not necessarily active/hard rock" format. There was a time in the 90's when this was hot, and Ape and Planet sounded very similar. Believe it! That said, Cox's 97X in Tampa does a more upbeat alternative format reminiscent of those days. I too have speculated on what would happen if X came here. Sadly, though, I don't think it would do any better than 80's. Then again, it could be good to hear some competition anyway. Eagle has claimed a lot of 80's tunes, and many are also heard on Rock. Much of what's left could be rolled into a new alternative station, even gold-based. Personally, I feel I am getting too old for Planet, and I spend a lot of time listening to mp3's of what they played back in the day.

--So 92.5 goes Spanish when there are already 3 Spanish stations on AM, run by an experienced and evidently quite able owner. I don't get it. Maybe the Latino community would know better than I would. Maybe there's a dire need for Spanish language radio in Hilliard. Jammin' Oldies I could understand (upsell). Gospel I could understand (look at WZAZ's numbers running the same format on another network). This one, I'd like to find out why.

--Dr. AJ Davis should have been on Kool 100.7 since day freakin' one. I say ANYONE in that building is better than nothing, and AJ would be a LOT better than nothing! Was Jim Byard ever a DJ? "Kool 100.7 with The Assoooociationnnnn-ah!"

--Good for Gator. Its immediate growth shocked the heck out of me, I tell you what.

--FM talk existed in Jacksonville already, on 106.5, anchored by Greaseman (THE MAN) in mornings and Don & Mike in afternoons. IIRC, it peaked at 1.2 in the 12+. Would it have done any better with local talent? Nah. If Paxson had PROMOTED Greaseman, he and the format may have lasted another year or so. But before anyone could tell, Clear Channel had bought the Paxson stations and all the talk was dropped from 106.5. At the same time Jacksonville also had Talk Radio 970, 1320 WJGR, and News-Talk 1460 WZNZ, all vying for a piece of that 690 pie, and none of them could make an impact.

--Don't count out Rooster just because it has competition. If CC can still make money with Rooster, it ain't going nowhere. If anything, they would tweak the format first. After all, country music fans have told me Rooster and QIK have sounded similar for a long time now.

--From what a credible source has told me about WJXR, you'd better believe it is a cash cow! It's just too bad all the profit goes somewhere other than maintaining the on-air equipment or paying the operators. Such is life...but when you're recording feeds on VHS tape and playing spots off carts in 2005, that's just sad. As for the format, that's another one I don't get, but obviously revenue and that persistent 1.0 are all the evidence I should need.

--Is Hot 105.7 any different from Beat or V101.5? If so, good for them. If not, why not? It's gotta take something unique to attract listeners to a weaker signal (at least those east of the river).

--Finally, I beg [hopefully not in vain] to Renda: Please don't mess with WSOS's format!

And don't expect Jack in Jax Soon

I have to admit, I pretty much listen to just a few stations (presets) on my car radio. I'll need to explore that scan button! Great job MB!

Anyway, the latest trends show WCBS FM in NYC way down and WJMK in Chicago basically flat. Both were former oldies stations.

Oldies, 60s/70s format or whatever you want to call it have a great deal of potential (and for the umpteenth time) if it is programmed correctly.

The Point is one of the few stations I listen to on a regular basis and I agree something will happen to them in the near future.
