Jax radio skirmishes

Here are a few stories someone in the biz (but requesting anonymity) forwarded to me.

WROO (Paxson) management had an intern shred documents because they were convinced that WQIK was diving into their dumpster. No joke.

A few years earlier, WCRJ (ROO's predecessor) sued Jacor and WQIK over a fake format-change memo. I don't know more details than that.

Then of course, there was Channel X. (April-October 1994.) Although the alternative rock and hip-hop format was noticeably different than what WAPE was doing at the time ("Today's Best Music, with No Rap or Hard Rock"), the station took delight at slamming WAPE on the air. There were even two-minute promos that simulated WAPE "staff meetings", with WAPE general manager "Marcus G. Warts," among other things, telling the deejays to go back to wearing polyester, and declaring that 101.5 Channel X would never work in Jacksonville ("this is Jacksonville, damnit!" Warts would exclaim in a deep Southern drawl.)

At times, J.R., the morning host, would just turn on the mic out of a song by saying "WAPE sucks!" before even getting to his own station's ID.

By the way, the real general manager of WAPE, Mark G. Schwartz, retaliated by insisting that anyone from Channel X who was going to WAPE to receive commercial dubs had to wait outside the building for 10 minutes before the dubs would be brought in.

Sounds like radio.

Yep. The best one I have is when we swapped music and jocks
for eight hours on April 1st with our biggest competitor
(signal-wise) We were Country for 8 hours using their
imaging (except for ID's) and they were CHR. Freaked alot
of people out. The absolute best free advertising I have
ever thought of. Couldn't believe they would go with it.
Started as a "joke." Amazing how great life was after
that for all of us. Miss those days. Of course, think
about that for in-house next year! Could be a cool
out-of-the-box trend - like J--k.

I think we stayed out of each others dumpsters after that.
:]

The "new" or "format flipping scam" is still strong today.
Even it's day, that was fun. Loved to watch other owners
drive by and see if they could see anything --- especially
good was when it involved that "third" station --- friendly
rivals who played along one way or another --- to get the
pre-madonna new arrival gonna shake things up GM back ---
at other stations --- they all watched, we all improved.
Man, did we have to much time on our hands - or what. Those
that fell for the scam never lasted six months. Cheers
me up just to think about it.

Good thread --- anybody got anything else???
Edited by tibbs on 07/28/05 06:28 PM.

Re: radio skirmishes

Before a format flip we played a funeral dirge for 72 hours straight
and drove a lot of listeners freaking crazy too.
