Jax tower questions

It's been some time since I was on the southside of Jax. I was there this past weekend, and as I was looking at all the changes around the Tinseltown area, my eyes were drawn to the changes on the towers. So.....

*I presume the new candelabra was built for DTV. Who's on it, including what appears to be an FM up top, as well as a side mounted 10+ bay FM,

*Who's new on the original WJXT candelabra?

*There appears to be a DTV side mounted about 1/2 way up on the Hogan Rd. master FM stick. Who is that?

*Anyone left on the old WTLV stick or atop the Modis building?

To answer the third question about what stations are currently broadcasting from the top of the Modis building, most of the stations that broadcast from the old WTLV tower are now low-power FM or TV translator stations like 94.3 FM, which rebroadcasts programming from Contemporary Christian, noncommercial radio station WCRJ ("88.1 The Promise"). I hope that this answers your question.

Anyone?

Since we apparently don't have any Jax tower geeks, I'll pose a related question.

Why are the Jax towers so short? 1k in height doesn't provide much of a coverage area, especially west & north of town. Who decided to place the towers where they are now, and why only 1000'?

Jax Towers, short?

Why do you think "only" 1,000 is so short?

Drive to Gainesville. Tell me how many 1,000 foot sticks you find. 2. WKTK and WOGK.

JAX has what? 4?

Don't know for sure but my guess is it has to to with the naval aviation facilities and stations in Miami & Charleston SC. My guess (not having done the math) is that they can't locate too far north or south of the city due to the need to protect the out-of-town stations (possibly also Dothan AL preventing a move to the west) and with the Naval Air Station the FAA wouldn't let them put up anything higher than 1000'.

Drive to Orlando & Tampa. 1500ft + in both cities. What's your point?

The Jax market covers a good amount of territory, and the height of the towers does not effectively cover the market. It seems to me the placement of the towers off Hogan Rd. was a poor decision. Somewhere just north or west (with 1500-2000ft of height) of downtown would have made more sense...and addressed FAA concerns.

Good guesses. But I would have to imaging there's plenty of 180 mile separation for 4, 12 & 7 already, plus Jax 4 & 12 were on air before Charleston, Dothan, Augusta & WPB I do believe.

The TV stations were probably engineered when far fewer people lived in the market, and almost no one on the perimeter....

Hogan Road was practically "the boonies" before the 70's.

Good guess, but what about Gainesville, pre-CJB?

I was about to say the same thing...Jax was pretty much a bathroom stop on 95 until the '80's. Nothing personal, same with my old home base of Richmond, VA.

I'd imagine it has to do with NAS Jacksonville and JIA along with the former Cecil Field. Kind of hems in the really tall towers. Go up to Kingsland and the towers are about 1500' tall.

Gainesville was probably stuck with the same situation that most rural towns have dealt with: Deep fringe antennas pointed to Jax (or hell, Orlando). This was pre-cable, so antennas were considerably more popular. Not to mention the land is fairly flat so any signal is going to have a better time penetrating areas.

Makes me miss the good ol' days of my folks' 12 element antenna w/ rotor! On iffy radios picking up a class A FM 50 miles away is no problem usually...so a full power TV station isn't too difficult to catch.
