Jay Baker?

Jay is currently involved in a great job in the private sector. He is happily married and is enjoying a wonderful life away from the mic. Having worked with him for 5 years, he was a total pro and one of the best. He took me under his wing and I am a much better broadcaster because of it. There aren't many broadcasters with Jay Baker's talent left out there.

When Bob and Tom debuted in Evansville back in '94 I tuned in, but once I heard "The Dick's Picks Variety Show" I was hooked. Jay, as Dick Nixon, created perverted yet creative radio. It's where you learned about "teabagging" and "The Upper Decker". The classic moment was during "Carburation Day" when Dick's special guest was Florence Henderson. She kept up with him to the climax, she read the "Jack's Tool Rental" spot and thought the tag line "Don't be a tool, rent one" was a typo (she assumed "fool"). When "Dick" told her it wasn't a typo her reaction was priceless, I wish I was rolling tape. My other favorite moment was his live read for The Evansville Brewing Company where he ad-libbed the line, "It's the beer Hitler would drink if he were alive today." Priceless!

When "Dick's Picks" was eliminated from Bob and Tom I moved on.

Last week, I heard Tommy G mention that Dick's Picks may be coming back! Maybe a possible non-compete running out??

I'm biased because I know it is one of his own favorites, but to me, Attention Nazi's (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZUjkugPeMk) is the best. The guy has an absolute catalogue of hits. Let's hope indeed those rumors are true. That would be amazing to see Jay back on the air with those guys. Jay's strength not only includes his tremendous on air abilities, but he is a great writer. His presence could only make that show stronger.

Is this the same Jay that used to be with Julie Paterson on ZPL back in the 90s? Or are we talking about someone else. If its who I think he is he was a really funny guy, even on ZPL back then, ZPL always has had a more tame female leaned morning show, even back when they were a CHR.

I produced Jay's short-lived morning show at the old WOFX in Cincinnati back in '91-'92. The guy would make me roll everyday. We used to play generic commercial beds off a CD and he would ad lib a different stupid spot for each cut. It was hilarious. Too bad we didn't really have the support of the new owners who bought the place in Summer '92, because it could have really developed. I remember going up to Indy with him one afternoon and strangers on the street and in Union Station were calling out to him. I'd never seen it like that before.

To ervery jock who thinks personal apperances aren't worth it, Jay wished me happy birthday on my 21st as he MC'd the show at Crackers. For a baby-DJ from Marion, that was a huge deal - can't tell you who the comedians were, but I remember Jay. I too transmitter readings every morning at 10 and we would turn on the pre-programmed EBS monitor of Q95 in our transmitter room to catch Dick's Pick's.... Started with just me and within a month, it had to be 8 to 10 of us in there every day standing around laughing for 20 minutes.... Hoping not to get caught by the GM.

A minor thread jack.

Back in the mid nineties I made a trip to the S/A satellite receivers to see what I could find and came across The Greaseman when he was syndicated at nights. I told a few of the other jocks who were fans of Grease and suddenly after 6pm there was a nightly party in a production room listening to Greaseman. I was on the air at the time and listened in cue.

Minor?... Try completely off topic, but thanks for playing.

I could easily have been one of those strangers, being from Indy and still living there at the time.

A buddy and I would go to the Sports Bar ("...on Meridian") every Friday night. Started out as a drink beer/meet girls endeavor; once Jay started doing Friday night remotes from there, we were going to see him. I remember being there once, right after the suicide of Kurt Cobain. We asked Jay what he thought about it. Without missing a beat, he comes back with, "Hey, that guy makes a great doorstop, doesn't he?"

One of my most prized recorded possessions (now on mp3) is from the day -- March 17, 1988 -- I rolled tape on "Dick's Picks" when they did "Dick Is Possessed." They played the "truly demonic" instrumental section of "Heartbeat It's A Lovebeat" by the DeFranco Family backwards, and heard Dick say, "I am demon possessed. You think Kennedy was such a stud? I had Marilyn Monroe, too. This I promise you...I am the devil!!"

I make it a point to listen to that at least once, yearly. Two people are responsible -- through inspiration -- for my entry into the vocation of radio: John Bogart (aka Bill Levitt) and Jay Baker.

Lighten up Francis :)

Hey, nobody calls me Francis.

Anybody calls me Francis and I'll kill 'em.

Well played.

Two topics I remember from Dick's Picks that stand out were "Strangest things you ever had in your mouth." and "Strangest things you ever did in the shower." I think I have the later on tape somewhere.

It's been many years but the word "mongoose" changed Dick's behavior. Anyone remember?

Arrrhhuuuuhh...make that February 17, 1988.

IIRC, he later referred to both topics and made a joke about them happening at the same time for Kristi Lee.

Now that's funny right there... even funnier if you know a little "inside."

I just went and watched that video - HILARIOUS! When was this? And WHY don't they bring him back?

Did they do this video at the time of the bit, or was this something someone came up with later?

I believe Mark Much put that together sometime last year. Just fooling around in his free time. Really adds a bit of flair to the piece doesn't it? An outstanding bit of radio!
