Jay Baker?

does anyone remember in the mid 90`s or so when jay baker and 2 other local guys did a mystery science theater 3000 type of show on an indianapolis uhf station(53 I think) ?

one time I called him at wklu ,when he was doing the evening shift.very shortly after russ oasis took over to see if he could play any greatful dead.just to test the waters on how much russ was changing the playlist.I figured if some of the dead was on the playlist (touch of grey perhaps) it was still a chance to hear them on wklu.


he said " we don`t play much grateful dead anymore". by the tone of his voice,I don`t know if he was annoyed or not.no matter he is a great talent.

not really. that was the only time I called jay baker and the only other ones I talked to were libby farr who was as pleasent on the phone as she was on the air and james brown(then all nighter on wklu both when quinn and russ ran it) and he kept those conversations going.

He has worked in management for a very high end home theatre/security installation company for almost ten years now. He worked there the entire time he was at WKLU, both under Quinns and Oasis. Many people don't know this but Jay was actually going to school to become a doctor before he decided to pursue radio.

I produced Jay's short-lived morning show at the old WOFX in Cincinnati back in '91-'92. The guy would make me roll everyday. We used to play generic commercial beds off a CD and he would ad lib a different stupid spot for each cut. It was hilarious. Too bad we didn't really have the support of the new owners who bought the place in Summer '92, because it could have really developed. I remember going up to Indy with him one afternoon and strangers on the street and in Union Station were calling out to him. I'd never seen it like that before.

I remember when he was in Cincy, and phoning in "Dicks Picks". One day, the station (WOFX) receptionist paged Jay in the middle of a bit. The guys went wild!
Lets not forget the orginal "Love Brothers", which are tame without Jay. Indeed a great talent!

Guys I would like to chime in for a sec. In just the few minutes I've been a member of this site I've learned much especially the demise of the KLU. Earlier I read in this posting about maybe a possibility of Jay doing something over at the "Q". I for one hope thats true as recently in the past 6 months I've sent some disappointment emails to the "Q" which never got answered BTW. I asked the question since the Bob & Tom show isn't all that anymore how long before they'll be off the air? I kindly (in my way) pointed out that I've been a listener of the B&T show since the day it came on the air when they were local. In the old days there was much talent in that little room including Jay Baker and Mark Patrick and asked why it isn't like that anymore? As I took out a membership on B&T's premium site so I could watch them every morning, I noticed the funny stuff didn't start until a taped clip was put in the CD player. Right now in my humble opinion the B&T Show on the "Q" is on it's way out if something doesn't change because the B&T show has become routine and dull. The only reason I still listen to the KLU is because they are now the only station in Indy that plays the oldies which I love since the flip of Gold 104.5 FM. But if theres a chance in hell Jay is gonna input some of his classic self back into the B&T Show over at the "Q" that might help pull them back away from the grave because thats where they're heading. I love the crew very much but it takes more than just going through the motions to keep listeners attention. I love Jay Baker as he is currently the only person on-air in Indy with that classic FM punch. BTW, where is that crazy Mark Patrick? He and Jay Baker a classic pair.

Let's see. 150 affiliates, give or take. Say....ten grand a month from each affiliate for the show (again, an estimate...many are higher...check local listings.) That's.....hang on....

One and a half million reasons to keep them on every month....or about 18 million reasons a year. Plus network spot revenue.


Certainly not a bad financial vote for a morning show that's 'not funny' in another thread, and 'not all that anymore'.

When the products of your labor create a million and a half dollars in revenue a month, THEN tell me how lousy the B&T show is. Until then, I gotta give my vote to the people over on Fall Creek.

Oh, and I'd love to see Jay return, at least on a limited basis. Don't think it will happen, but....one can always dream, can't they?

Mark Patrick is working for XM doing a morning baseball show on the network.

The "vintage" Bob and Tom was so great because everyone had a roll. And everyone played that roll to perfection. The core is still in place, but when you eliminate the "outside players" it diminishes the creativity. Even without Jay and all those other talented people from the old days, people are still listening, and still listening in droves. Which I think is a credit to what a reputation the Bob and Tom brand has created.

But there is no doubt that adding Jay Baker back to that line up would create a huge influx of creativity. Hard to believe, but Jay is even more funny and clever today than he was back then. He has a ton of great radio left in him. It would be really great to see Bob and Tom bring him back.

If you have never worked a music shift that 'took requests' you have no idea what I'm talking about.

Most TEENS will call in, request a song, and hang up.

OLDER callers typically want to talk to you like you are somehow their friend because your job/boss requires you to take requests. OLDER callers don't understand you're not there as a DJ to be their friend, or spend your entire song set talking to them (like you don't have other tasks that need to be completed), or that calling every night to 'check in' with another request and conversation is NOT fun for the DJs.

How is it that in this day and age of audio players, CD players, etc., you want to call a radio station and wait HOURS to hear your little song?

I'm just saying what most jocks know that CAN'T say.
