Jay Baker?

If you have never worked a music shift that 'took requests' you have no idea what I'm talking about.

Most TEENS will call in, request a song, and hang up.

OLDER callers typically want to talk to you like you are somehow their friend because your job/boss requires you to take requests. OLDER callers don't understand you're not there as a DJ to be their friend, or spend your entire song set talking to them (like you don't have other tasks that need to be completed), or that calling every night to 'check in' with another request and conversation is NOT fun for the DJs.

How is it that in this day and age of audio players, CD players, etc., you want to call a radio station and wait HOURS to hear your little song?

I'm just saying what most jocks know that CAN'T say {quote}

I have been in this biz a long long time in small, medium, and large markets. I know how you feel. But, keep it a secret.
Mistreating a fan can haunt you for years and have real consequences.

Working in a tramma unit for 12 hr shift produces more pressure and stress than sitting in front of a microphone for 4 hrs. Its hard to keep your feelings in check but, we do it, we have to. Just saying that its possible to treat people the way you want to be treated. I used to think that Chick McGee was a funny, cool guy. Some years ago WFBQ had a "Dog Days of Summer at Bush Stadium and were giving out hotdogs, etc from their sponser. Chick was there and someone asked him a harmless question and he really snapped at them angrily. I wittnessed that and from right there my opinion of him changed. You can have a public persona but you'd better back it up with a sense of how the public wants to be treated as well.
In talking with several other people there at the time, Chick changed their opinions of him as well....

Over the last twenty years I have dealt with Mr McGee on numerous occasions. Both in radio and out of radio and have found him to always be a easy person to get along with. Anybody who has dealt with hundreds of people on a public appearance knows that it can be a real test on your patience and at times scary. Dealing with a lot of people your bound to rub some wrong, it's just the way it is.

Any radio personality that can first of all make it for over twenty years in a profesion that no one makes it in. Earns a way abover average income, takes their wacky radio bits and sell them all over the country along with huge ratings, have my admiration.

Granted. I can admire longevity through diligent work, I also know when someone is being just plain mean. I'm sure that the public overwhelms at times but, his behavior that day however brief, was enough to form a different opinion in the publics mind. I'm sure he's a nice guy and a joy to work with but, we weren't his co-workers and don't see the other side of his personality and when we do, it surprises us all. That was 18 years ago and I don't normally hold things like this in mind for that length of time.
