Jay Butler

I'm surprised this news has not made it here yet.

Jay Butler passed away this past Sunday evening at UNC Hospital. I got an email from Jay, one he sent to a bunch of folks, on January 4th saying he had encountered some very serious health problems including a tumor near the middle of his spine. The early result of those problems was paralysis from the waist down. Through further procedures Jay prognosis worsened. It seems his body had become riddled with cancer. His last few weeks could not have been pleasant. Those who visited him said his spirits were great and he was fighting back a hard as he could. There was just too much for him to fight. The funeral services will be held at the Fuquay-Varina Baptist Church Friday the 12th at 1:00p. Jay had a big heart and will be missed.

There is a news posting on the WPTF website. Moose, I talked with Chicken Eddie on Friday and he told me Jay was really sick.

Jay and I were roommates in Cary back in the early 80s. He worked nights at WKIX and I worked mornings at WYYD. Hardly ever saw each other! Boy, are there some stories to tell from those days! What a talented guy he was!

I should forward you the email he sent out. This was after the surgery to remove the first tumor they found, and after he had lost the use of his legs. He was still upbeat and urging all of his friends to make sure they had health insurance, which he did not. He was a helluva lot more upbeat than I would have been in the same situation.

I had forgotten that you and he were roommates. I've heard a few of those stories from each of you in the past!

WoW, Being out of the market now I do not get much info about what is hapening (other than this board)
I worked with Jay in the 80's with Xtalker, Smitty, and the rest of the croud at KIX. I am sorry to hear about Jay's passing. It just seems as of late, there have been several folks pass away. I guess the older we get, the more we see this. Kinda makes you think, huh? Slightly modifying a song if I may:
If there's a rock and roll Heaven, You know they have a hell of a radio station!!!!!

I understand they had a memorial service on Friday (possibly Saturday) and a lot of the old KIX gang was there. Sorry I missed it.

I had the good fortune of working with "Jaybo" in the mid 90's at WQDR. He was a great guy and always gave me good advice in our business. May God Bless his family in this time.

Jay's situation deteriorated rapidly starting a few days before he passed away. His visitation and funeral were very nice and well attended. He will be missed.
