Jay Leno Show debuts with a Hugh Grant moment

I wonder how Leno is doing in Canada, since his competition at 10:00 happens to be "The National" on CBC!

But then again, Peter Mansbridge doesn't need to worry.

watching leno without the desk, reminds me of an old late afternoon talk show like Mike Douglas had. jay leno is one of the nice guys in show business and i wish him well, besides seeing Leno in Prime-Time makes Letterman crazy.

Oh, I wouldn't quite go that far.

Letterman making $40-million a year and taping at 4 or 7 p.m. has it's perks. I think Dave's doing just fine with it.

In fact, he might be laughing all the way to the bank after watching the erosion of what Jay's been doing this week after the debut. Losing half your audience over three days in "primetime" must be driving NBC crazier than Dave. Comparing what he does in primetime vs. late night is mixing apples and oranges.

Maybe I missed this, but does anyone know when Leno is taping his new show? And does he have the same size audience as he did for Tonight?

This is his premiere week so to compare the audience with his Tonight Show is very pre-mature. As for his taping, I do not know what time he tapes. I think he should do it live at 7pm so the East Coast would have a live feed.

After watching part of tonights show, I watched up to the end of the DL segment. The show was very lame.

Any word on what happened with John Melendez? Budget cuts, maybe?

Leno still tapes at NBC in Burbank. He just moved to a larger studio. He's now in Studio 11. Many canceled Soaps have taped in 11. I think "Passions" was one of them. Melendez is still with the show, but now he's just a writer instead of the announcer. Jay told a reporter that it was difficult having John as second Banana when he already had Kevin Eubanks there (who is like second Banana.) So Jay made John a writer instead. Of course Jay's reasoning doesn't make much sense since the show still has an announcer. So why not just keep John as the announcer. Why hire a new announcer? It seems more like Jay is just trying to get rid of John if you ask me. But Mr. Nice guy is making it a slow less painful transition for John.

East coast, east coast. It's always the east coast. You'd think everyone
lives on the east coast. Do the show live for the left coast at 10 PM PT
and let the rest of the network see it a week later via kinescope!

(Sarcasm mode now off.)

I might agree that if ABC wants to, they can merge World News and Nightline with 20/20 into a Monday-Friday 10/9pm news hour, which would result in the Jimmy Kimmel show getting that earlier start time it's been craving for all these last few years.

If they do that, I pray they keep the 20/20 influence out of it. Nightline is no longer the prestigious program it was when Koppel was in charge, but at least it's got some hard news content. 20/20 is increasingly becoming yet another "news magazine" that runs those sensationalized stretched-out one hour true-crime exposes. ABC's version of Dateline, in other words.

I don't think the world needs that every weeknight at 10:00.

no, dave still thinks he should have gotten the tonight show and will never get over it, and whatever happens to leno, letterman will never make prime-time. the deal with leno is, if you liked him at 11:30, its pretty much the same show and you will watch him in prime time(he beat letterman like a drum for 20 years)... if you didn't watch leno at 11:30, he will not miss you in prime-time.

And how, praytell, do you have the foggiest idea what Letterman is thinking now and whether or not he "got over" something?

After a very slow start Jay at 10pm is slowly getting better. He really needs to have his desk back full-time though.

I respectfully disagree. Same old stale act.

And the desk won't make Leno any better interviewer. Maybe he'd be better leaning on the front fender of a classic car instead.

I'm afraid he's already had his highest ratings. Next week he's up against the premieres of all the blockbuster shows that made NBC the 4th rated network. CSI Miami night will be especially brutal. The promos say his big guests that week are Pee Wee Herman...and Amy Poehler??? eh.

Still, its better than the scripted stuff NBC had.

And who says Letterman ever wanted prime time? He's probably ecstatic he's up against Conan.

I did watch Friday's show. The question I have that was the Friday show live? When the second segment with Drew Barrymore was over it was still light. The 10 questions at 10 with Mel Gibson segment, he was on the east coast and it was dark. Does NBC start taping the show at 7PM PST for the west coast airing at 100m PST? Or start taping Friday's show at 6:30PM PST and start airing the show at a half hour delay for the east coast?

10PM

Yes, Mondays will always be Jay's biggest hurdle. CSI Miami and ESPN Monday Night Football will triumph. But Tuesdays, not so much. Wednesdays, so-so. Thursday will be awful too, since the Mentalist could overtake CSI Original Recipe as the Thursday Ratings Leader. Friday ratings are low for everyone.

"Season Premiere Week" (or what's left of it) will hurt a bit, but NBC-Universal doesn't have to worry about 10PM for at least a couple years -- if ever again. It can focus its efforts on 8PM-10PM and its dozen or so cable properties.

Jay will spike when reruns pop up on CBS/ABC, during the "summer season", and the few times a year when a pop-culture issue explodes on the scene.

Has Leno already started stealing bits for his show? This 10@10, I remember Craig Kilborn having his segment '5 Questions' with his guest on the set. Hmmmmmm. Didn't take so long to use someone else's idea!

Leno tapes at 4 PM his time which is 7 PM West Coast. I know this because I have tickets to the new show that say Show time 4:00 PM.
