I know there has been a lot of bad mouthing of the Jay Leno Show here. The bits after the monologue are the weakest part of the show to me. Last night with Rod Stewart in a sit down interview and performing, it was great. On a 1-10 scale, most nights I could give it a 7-8. If they could improve the bits after monolgue it would be much better.

I've always liked Headlines, but it just doesn't seem as funny as
when it followed the monologue on the Tonight Show.
BTW, is there a "usual" night of the week for Jaywalking and his
one-off of Jeopardy?

I think the Leno "experiment" is still too young to draw any conclusions. I find myself tuning in for the monologue (among the most primary reasons, it's earlier!). But, yes, I find myself losing interest after that. Headlines at the end does seem odd. The couch segment was uncomfortable at first, but only because it was SO different from what viewers were used to. I think it is slowly evolving into somewhat of a "signature". I wouldn't count this show out just yet. A little tinkering here and there, and it could work. Just IMHO.

Operative word is "some". As others have noted, this is a long-term experiment. Do the affiliates really think that they would have better numbers with "Southland" or "Law and Order: Season 20" at 10PM? Aside from "SVU", the ratings for pricey scripted programming would be on par with what Jay delivers. Plus, Jay is committed to 46 weeks of brand-new programming. Of course, ratings are going to take a hit during the fall. When the other networks are in reruns or showing unproven reality shows later in the season, Jay should deliver more eyeballs to the NBC locals.
It's tough for all of network TV these days. NBC is at least trying to re-invent something. Four hours of "Today" and four hours of "Tonight" (Jay-Conan-Jimmy-CarsonDaly) seem like logical tentpoles for a network to build on.

Excellent points. The TV world is evolving quite quickly, and who is to say this won't pay off for NBC eventually?
NBC isn't re-inventing anything with Leno.
They are simply diluting the pool and capsizing the talk/variety format all together.
The waters all ready has too many bodies wading around in it that it's smelling a bit like pee.
In between the Ellens and Oprahs and Daves and Taras and Jimmys and Craigs and Jays and Bonnies and Regises and Conans and Jons and Stephens and Larrys and local morning shows that interview celebrities under the most fringe guise as news, I'm pretty much sick of most all of them.
They are simply diluting the pool and capsizing the talk/variety format all together.

I'm sorry, I don't see this low budget "experiment" working at all in the future. I'm surprised many of you watch even the monologue...the one I saw last week was awful. Not only has the show dropped the 10pm ratings into 1 share territory, it has taken the longtime #1 crown away from NBC's late night. Conan and Fallon..not working out.
Plus it's provided a nice boost to the CBS and ABC prime time. Do you really think shows like "The Good Wife" would be the hits they are if there was some good scripted competition on NBC?
If NBC was smart they'd put things back where they were, and spend a coupla' bucks to get at least one decent scripted show on the air...c'mon NBC! (frustrated affiliate employee).

When the 10:00 PM Leno Show was first announced, speculation was that at least part of the NBC's reason was their fear that Jay would bolt to another network (ABC or Fox) to take over the 11:30 slot, and put the hurt on the Tonight Show's ratings.
But one has to wonder now - if NBC declares the show a failed experiment, and cancels it - the network can say that they tried, and Leno would be less likely to be picked up by ABC or Fox in the late night slot because he's now damaged goods.

As to "weak competition," I'm not sure I'd agree. IMHO, Letterman's show was clearly superior than Leno's...that would be in the early years, before Dave stopped trying and starting coasting. So I never understood how Leno managed to pass Letterman in the ratings after awhile. I just chalked it up to the typical American tendency to prefer mass market entertainment to something edgier and more inventive.
I gotta say I like the Leno show. I have to get up before the chickens so I can't get involved in 10:00 PM hour dramas. So I can watch 15 minutes or a half hour and then inspect my eyelids. It is a pretty good show and it is more Leno than I have watched in many years.

Letterman is clearly the better interviewer but still well within the "soft" zone. But in his monologue's he appears to be half-asleep (when he's not condescending to his audience). I think he appeals to a more "mature" audience than the "hipper" Leno (who apparently still thinks he's doing stand-up in front of a bunch of drunks).
Myself, when watching Letterman, which is very seldom, I'm always waiting for him to skewer his hand while doing that pencil flipping thingie.

Can anyone do the same with the Jay Leno Tonight Show theme? Maybe a couple of bars but then it morphs into oblivion. Now Dave, Craig and Conan have good themes, as for Jimmy Fallon, the jury is still deliberating.

As far as I can tell, the "networks' are just channels on the local cable system. There is origional programming on TNT and USA, much like "network" stuff. John Stewart is on 5 nights a week as is most cable hosts like Glenn Beck, Anderson Cooper, and Rachel Maddow. Why not Leno?
