Jay Leno to 10 PM Weeknights on NBC?

Anyone know what kind of rating NBC was getting in the 10p - 11p (9p - 10p) slot so far? What kind of rating will Leno have to get to sustain him there?

Interesting idea though, 'cause if Leno fails NBC can boot him and say "It's not our fault, he couldn't pull in the rating."

In a way it does reduce NBC prime time by five hour/week. I wonder what will happen if Leno flops now. Will NBC take back the hour? Or will they give it to the affiliates to they can do an earlier newscast like on CW and FOX stations?

This sounds like a win-win. NBC has one less hour of prime-time to gamble with (everything they have done lately has failed)...and they keep Jay.

I wonder if they might consider making 10-10:30 PM local news time (some Fox affiliates have monster ratings), with Jay at 10:30-11:30 PM. I belive the FCC considers prime time until 11:30, so if that is the case NBC would not lose their full-service status.

Has any of the big three (ABC, CBS, or NBC) done this before (program the same show five nights a week in a single set aside timeslot 8-11PM ET/PT)?

NBC is moving to a new complex so there would be a new studio (I suspect the show would remain in LA). I also wonder if Kevin Eubanks and John Melendez would join Jay.

I give them points for trying something bold, something different. It's not like there's much they could do worse than they already are....

Do you think it would be cheaper for NBC to spend money on new fictitous shows that would likely get cancelled anyway, than on a new Leno contract?

Note that this move comes right on the heels of NBC firing their entertainment executive, responsible for the new "Knight Rider" and "Lipstick Jungle," among others.

Could this be the first step toward all of the big 3 networks going to a nightly show in the 10 PM ET slot as well? Maybe not a talk show like Leno, but something else that would cost less to do than dramatic series, especially considering the direction of the economy? Just PLEASE no infomercials like Fox is planning for Saturday mornings! ::)

Jay isn't going to move from his Burbank studio. NBC is moving onto the Universal lot, not getting new studios. Conan O'Brien's new studio on the Universal lot is the old Jack Benny Show soundstage (Stage One). It's just getting a total refurb. The only new studios being built at Universal (actually next to the Metro subway station) are for KNBC 4, KWHY 22, KVEA 52 and the West Coast NBC News Bureau. NBC Universal has already sold the NBC Burbank lot but it will remain as tv production studios. In fact, the lot is in for a lot of construction with new offices and studios.

NBC is not going to change the time of the local news for their affiliates. This is the lead-in they have been looking for.

Has any other network done this before, give 5 nights in prime time to one show? I don't keep up with TV anymore, I know "Millionaire" was on quite a number of times per week.

So this will mean NBC will have 3½ hours a night (Leno, O'Brien, Fallon, Daly) and CBS will have 2 hours (Letterman, Ferguson) and ABC will have 1 hour with (Kimmel) that's 6½ hours per night of celebrities.

They are gonna have to come up with some more celebrities

:)

I think they were only on five nights a week for a couple weeks at a time during a few occasions, then the rest of the time they were on 2-3 times a week, plus on Sunday nights. Otherwise I can't think of anything to that effect in recent memory.

Has everyone forgotten the telenovelas that MyNetworkTV ran five nights a week with a recap on Sat when they first came on the air? Granted they are in the league of NBC but this is certainly not the first time that a network has stripped a show in primetime.

I'm thinking the amount of cash that Conan will get is keeping him from thinking:

"Hey...I'm still behind Leno AND the Local News!"

In a weird way, this might be the best news that Conan O'Brien could get. With everyone claiming that Conan will have to 'adjust' his humor for the current Tonight Show audience, that crowd will get a few more years of Jay Leno (albeit 90 minutes early). O'Brien can essentially move and fuse his Late Night brand of comedy into the New Tonight Show.

I doubt scheduling guests would be much of a problem. There's always a new movie, TV show, music release, or live performance to promote. And they could get around the usual entertainment celeb route with more professional athletes or interesting people in the news as guests.

Per the report just on the 11 PM news on KNBC in L.A., which shares studios with Leno, the annoucement will be made at NBC Burbank at 9 AM PST on Tuesday.

If "Len at Ten" catches wildfire, you can bet the other networks will follow suit. And not just because it will save them some cash.

It sounds like a foregone conclusion: Leno at 10,
local news at 11, Conan O'Brien at 11:35, Jimmy
Fallon at 12:35. But I wonder why none of the
Big Three has followed the lead of Fox and the CW
and given 10 PM back to the affiliates? As someone
pointed out, some Fox stations' 10 PM newscasts have
monster ratings (Birmingham comes immediately to mind).

Will CBS & ABC be far behind at doing a nightly show at 9pmCT? I think it would be cool if CBS counter programmed Jay by moving "The Price is Right" to 9PM.
