NewsStud are you a CHR Radio Fan?

I'm a radio fan. I often listen to CHR and Urban, depending on my mood and depending on what the station happens to be playing at the time.

I work in news radio... hence that silly handle I use here.

Yeah, I tend to go on rants when people jump into my head and make disgusting assumptions about my racial motives. Odd, that.

No, I don't know everything; far from it. But you're the one who declared that PPM is flawed, and when pressed for your reasoning, you declared it must be flawed because the ratings for 102 Jamz dropped big-time when Orlando switched from diaries to PPM. You've provided nothing beyond that... heck, *I* did a far more thorough job of making a case against PPM than you did.

If you're going to make strong declarations like that with flimsy backup, don't be surprised when someone challenges you on it.

I sure hope 102 Jamz survives. Other Urban stations in other markets have survived the transition from diaries to PPM, so 102 Jamz needs to study those other stations and learn some lessons. If they do, they'll be fine. But if not, they'll join a LONG list of stations across the country in a variety of formats aimed at a variety of audiences that flipped after PPM showed their audience wasn't as big as they thought.

Donta, take a chill pill buddy. 102 Jamz is a great heritage radio station and I sure hope it stays that way. I have noticed they sound like a CHRurban. By the way, why is race an issue here? 102 Jamz has done well with many demographics over the years.

Regardless, you bring up several noteworthy points, all of which I simply don't have enough knowledge to understand. I do enjoy hearing the arguments but certainly don't see where race plays such an issue.

@Vader race is not an issue REALLY. I think however to ignore the fact that nationally not just in Orlando but across the United States that young end Urban stations(18-34) have taken a BIG hit with PPM would just be silly to do so. Urban AC stations have not been affected as much but radio executives all over want to know why the ratings drop. WGCI(Chicago),WPGC(Washington,DC),WUSL(Philadelphia),HOT 97(New York) all were TOP RATED stations and over night dropped like a rock with no real reason as to why. I will take the chill pill buddy. Hmmm, I will give a summation of my similar assessment on the Urban board about WJHM "102 Jamz". CBS has flopping with this station since 2005 when they decided to make the stupid decision to go from local morning drive to syndication with Steve Harvey. Jamz was always a CHRurban even when it brought on former "Star 94.5" late night jock, Bruce B-Box, to do their "Night Jamz" slow jams show from 2005-2008. The problems was became evident when mornings through night time became a revolving door of personalities that were short termed or lacked any local appeal to Orlando's listening audience. Steve DeMann being bumped out by CBS suits and got his revenge by programming "Power 95.3" while beating Jamz.

Jamz, like Washington DC sister station WPGC, could survive as a CHRuban if they were to find a PD that actually is familiar with the market, but they haven't. No offense to Melony Torres, but the moves she and the interim PD has made are dumb and will continue to flop. The idea chasing a CHR/Mainstream while ceding the growing black audience of the market (due to Haitian immigrants and young black professionals from other places) to Cox will just leave the door open for an actual urban to come into this market and capture that audience. Cox might just skew Power more urban to just do that.

I am under the belief, the black audience in the Orlando market might be underrepresented in PPM. This is due to the fact that some of the recent issues have arose in other markets with PPM over the past 3 years. Arbitron uses the US Census decennial counts and the 5 year estimates as their litmus. Some blacks don't listen to urban music-formatted stations, but more often than not they do. It is one of those issues where you have to wonder why some markets with decent black population (at least 15% and up) can maintain in the PPM era, while others have stations that just slide off the radar.
