JAY MARVIN REACHING THE GREAT AMERICAN SOUTHWEST

"We cover the metro at night. Problem is after sundown we have a strong signal to the north but not the south. The dial postion AM760 has no long term talk history having been a bunch of formats. So we have a real uphill battle. A lot of people don't even know we're here. Also I have a feeling a lot of people will tell ARB and others they listen to NPR because it sounds good. Another thing the people who listen to us have the highest income in the market. Do people like that really take time out to fill out an ARB diary?"

Jay,

FYI -

After KKZN powers up, I've heard you at sunrise in Las Vegas, NV, and Kingman, AZ. In Vegas there is competition from KFMB 760 San Diego which usually predominates.

I've also heard KKZN at night in Santa Fe, NM. I have heard the CBS news jingle in the background (but no call letters) from KKZN at night in Seattle, WA w/ only 1,000 watts, mixed with Canadian 760's (where you can hear the words!).

I suspect that you have a large following, daytime throughout the great american southwest, in several states...just like other local hosts on 50,000 watt powerhouses like Jim Villanucci at KKOB/Albuquerque, who gets callers from Phoenix all the time.

You're right. I'm hearing KKZN pretty good in Santa Fe.

Very cool.

Is this during the day, or at night? At night, 760 may fade in and out. During the day, it might face competition from 770 KOB unless you have a good radio and can tune to 755kHz-757kHz on something like a Grundig/Eton E5.

The 760 directional pattern NW, W, and SW during the day is phenomenal. Both day and night, they have to protect WJR 760 (A) Detroit. At night, they have to protect KFMB 760 San Diego.

This was actually at the time of posting, late evening, no special antenna. Probably catching the ground wave, since there seemed to be no fading.

FYI: I've picked up Jay's show here in Bismarck, ND a coupla times...

Hey Jim, that's Ed Schultz Country up there!

What time of day (or night) was this? 760 is a regional frequency so you never know where a 760 signal might go.

Was this at sunset, or sunrise?

There is discussion of the AM 760 signal right now at the Dx/Reception board.

Tail end of Jay's show...around 8AM. Shortly after sunrise, local time...

Jim! Part of my family is from Bismark and I use to spend summers there when I was a kid! One of my all time favorite places. First time I ever saw snow was there one winter!

It's still a nice place to live and raise a family; unfortunately, it has become a terrible radio market in recent years...

The signal would fade after sunrise, Up to 2 hours in the winter, due to the low sun angle. KKZN goes from 1,000 watts night to 50,000 watts day. Both patterns are directional.

I think it could be explored if the KKZN night signal lobes could be increased to cover all the way from Ft. Collins to Colorado Springs, that might require 6 towers with all the various 750,760,770 protections. It can't go towards Detroit at all because of the Class A there on 760.
